Job Summary

Reporting to the District Director of Admissions and Records, the grant-funded Coordinator of VA Benefits Certification is responsible for overseeing VA certification and other processes which allow eligible students to receive and maintain Federal funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Performance Requirements*
  • Assists with VA certification unit planning, design, development, and implementation
  • Provides resource management to the department and briefs and informs departmental leadership of certification activity
  • Serves on committees as directed and attends appropriate and approved external meetings, conferences, and workshops
  • Updates procedures as necessary or assigned to improve processes and maintain compliance with changing requirements
  • Develops and supports workflows and reaches expert proficiency with required technologies, including, but not limited to TCC student information and document management systems, VA and DoD databases
  • Assists with preparing applications for Texas Veteran Commission (TVC) approval of academic programs
  • Monitors VA online system listings of TCC approved programs of study
  • Serves as a School Certifying Official for VA (includes initial and annual training)
  • Maintains TCC’s VA SCO roster
  • Confers with VA Educational Liaison Representatives and Compliance Surveyors, as needed
  • Trains and supervises classified staff in department

General Supervision and Management
Provides leadership for a team comprised of full-time and part-time staff positions

Service Excellence
  • Participates on behalf of the College in external community organizations and associations as assigned to support the essential performance requirements
  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
  • Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation, and creativity and service to the College
  • Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of the College

Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the District Director of Admissions and Records

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and three (3) year’s working experience related to the Essential Performance Requirements at a VA-approved Institution of Higher Learning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One (1) year’s experience supervising (e.g., managing, evaluating the performance of others; leading projects or processes)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience as a Department of Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official
  • Experience planning and implementing programs directly related to educational benefits for veterans and military-connected college students
  • Experience in determining eligibility for flight training using VA funding

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of VA and DoD database systems
  • Skilled in using applications and enterprise systems, to include Teams, Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with diverse populations
  • Skilled in training and supervision
  • Ability to think critically to effectively solve and communicate problems in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to analyze data and provide sound recommendations based on policy, procedure, practice and regulations
  • Ability to delegate work appropriately to staff to meet deliverables
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and a setting that is diverse and urban
