General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Administrative Director, Residence Life, the Residence Life Manager manages and directs the day-to-day operations of the College residential units. This position advises and supervises student programming in the residence halls, ensures the safety and welfare of all residents, and enforces all residence hall policies and procedures in accordance with College policy. This is a twelve-month, 260-day live-in position. Hours of work will be arranged on a 40-hour work week. Evening, overnight, and weekend student supervision is a regular part of the job. An unfurnished apartment is provided. This is a full-time regular position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist in Developing Housing Policies:
      • Assists in developing and implementing housing policies and procedures consistent with College policy, under the guidance of the Administrative Director, Residence Life.

     

  • Policy Enforcement:
    • Enforces established policies and procedures equitably and fairly.
    • Serves as an intermediary with students, Resident Assistants, and administration.
  • Supervises Resident Assistants:
    • Interviews, selects, evaluates, and directly supervises the work of the Resident Assistants in conjunction with the Residence Life Manager.
    • Conducts in-service training for Resident Assistants.
  • Provides Residence Life Programming:
    • In cooperation with the Assistant Residence Life Manager and the Resident Assistants, plan, organize, prepare, and implement residence life programming options that foster academic, social, cultural, and personal growth.
    • Coordinate programming options with the Student Life Coordinator and plan activities through the campus Prevention Programming Team.
    • Evaluate the success of programming through co-curricular assessment tools.
  • Coordinates and Supervises Room Inspections:
    • Supervise and/or conduct routine inspections of all rooms and apartments for safety, health, and welfare.
  • Maintains Student Files:
    • Maintains student files.
    • Reports student status to the Dean of Students and Business Office.
  • Maintenance and Upkeep:
    • In cooperation with the campus maintenance department, ensures that the housing facilities and equipment are maintained in operational condition.
  • Monitors Residence Security:
    • In cooperation with the campus Safety & Security Coordinator and security company, ensures that overall security measures are maintained.
    • Continuously evaluates and alters student safety and security measures, if and when needed.
    • Ensures that an accurate inventory of keys is available and current.
    • Ensures buildings are secure.
  • Supervises Check-In and Check-Out:
    • Checks new students into student housing, each term.
    • Checks graduates and students leaving student housing, at the end of each term.
  • Manage Residence Life Budget:
    • Utilize an annual budget to monitor expenditures throughout the year to work within the budget, with the Administrative Director, Residence Life.
  • Student Housing Tours/Marketing:
    • Assists with showing rooms to prospective students for tours and special events.
    • In cooperation with Public Information and the Administrative Director – Residence Life, develop promotional items to attract students to live on campus.
    • Work with Admissions staff to disseminate information to prospective students.
  • Public Relations:
    • Maintains good public relations with the college community and the community by keeping them apprised of student activities.
    • Encouraged to participate in community organizations.
  • Coordinates and Performs Other Functions as Requested
    • Organizes, plans, and implements other functions as assigned by the Administrative Director, Residence Life, or the Dean of Students.

    • Maximize operational efficiency by enhancing policies and procedures, staffing, and communication processes and practices.
    • Enhance positive communication processes and practices and maximize a positive and engaging organizational environment by encouraging input, reflective and transparent communication, compassion, and respect toward the views and ideas of others.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist in developing and justifying room rate increases.
  • Supervise the use and upkeep of recreational equipment and facilities.
  • Supervise the use and upkeep of computer equipment and facilities.
  • Provide appropriate counseling and referral assistance for students.
  • Perform other related duties within the division/program as assigned.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGESKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Ability to help students with college adjustment-related concerns and make appropriate referrals to College or community resources as necessary.
  • Ability and knowledge to convey the lifestyle and student responsibilities required in residential living.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize, identify, and resolve potential student problems.
  • Ability and skills to articulate Residence Life policies to residents, verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to work, communicate, and develop rapport with students, alumni, faculty/staff, administration, and community groups.
  • Ability and skills to communicate effectively with groups and individuals in problem resolution.
  • Ability to apply fair and equitable disciplinary sanctions upon students who have violated established policy.
  • Ability to organize, develop, and implement student programming for the benefit of residential students.
  • Knowledge and ability to use a computer for word processing, database management, email, and other administrative functions.
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects including the human body. Mobility is occasionally required. The ability to use stairs in a multi-story dormitory is required.
  • The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

SCHEDULE

Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. The usual work hours for this position are generally scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday, requiring a minimum of a 40-hour workweek. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of the College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek. This is a full-time regular position based on a 260-day work calendar.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates degree in psychology, sociology, education, counseling, social work, human development, or related field.
  • One (1) year of experience working with students in a college environment, social/human services, education, marketing, or similar occupations where the ability to work with people is important.
  • Six (6) months of additional experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity either in paid employment or in a volunteer capacity as an organizational officer. It is not essential that the supervisory experience be in housing.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree to include at least 12 credit hours of coursework in psychology, sociology, human development, counseling, education, or social work.
  • One (1) year of residence hall experience; living and working with students as a student resident assistant, residence life manager, or assistant residence life manager.
