Position Summary:

  • This individual will be responsible for providing confidential counseling services to students in a safe, friendly environment and to work towards improving the mental health of students with the overall goal of improving their personal, academic, and overall functioning. Counseling services may include short term individual therapy, group therapy, educational workshops, consultation services, crisis intervention, and referral services. All aspects of counseling are strength based as the Mental Health Counselor work collaboratively with students, staff and the TSCC community to provide solution-focused therapy to enhance the quality of student life.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide triage for and individual and group counseling for the student population experiencing interpersonal, emotional and psychological concerns using a short-term, solution focused therapeutic framework.
  • Identify appropriate student populations for group counseling and outreach programming.
  • Adhere to best practices, applicable state and federal statutes, local health and safety laws and regulations, student affairs risk management and professional code of ethics.
  • Devise, implement and evaluate plans of care utilizing sound clinical judgments based on a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment of the students.
  • Participate in developing programs/workshops and department materials.
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency services support to students, as well as consult with institutional staff.
  • Facilitate appropriate off-campus referrals for counseling requests beyond scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate effective communication.
  • Maintain visible office hours.
  • Maintain professional development relevant to mental health in higher education.
  • Maintain accurate records and proper confidential files and reporting.
  • Assess effectiveness of services through program evaluation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned in support of the TSCC mission.

Program Area Responsibilities (as applicable):

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention/emergency services, and demonstrated crisis intervention skills and techniques.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards of licensed mental health professionals.
  • Knowledge of clinical documentation and recordkeeping rules and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to providing direct mental health care and clinical preceptorship to student interns or other mental health professionals.

Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Masters degree from an accredited social work, clinical mental health counseling program, clinical rehabilitation counseling program, or similar.
  • 2 years experience as a counselor.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to providing direct clinical preceptorship to student interns or other mental health professionals.
  • Provide mental health services, including clinical triage, brief individual and group therapy and mental health assessment and referral services to students with a wide range of mental health needs to support their academic success and retention.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopting an effective course of action.
  • Continuously engage in learning and professional development.
  • Work cooperatively and productively with internal and external constituencies.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations (as applicable):

  • Active State of Ohio license to practice independently
