POSITION: Full-Time Academic Advisor: Academic Counselor; Student Success Hub Advising; Lawrence Campus, 45 Franklin Street; MCCC/MTA Unit Professional Position; 37.5 hours/week, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm, Tuesday 11:00am - 7:00pm; Pay Grade 5

SUMMARY: The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing academic advising to students assigned to the Student Success Hub Advising Centers. In addition to new students, the advisor will work with special populations such as adult learners returning to college, the Early College Program, student who are on Academic Probation, and other populations as determined. Employing the Developmental Model of Advising, which includes holistic and proactive advising, will enable students to make informed and appropriate decisions regarding their academic path. As a member of the larger Enrollment Services team, the advisor will ensure that new students have completed mandatory orientation prior to registration. The advisor will work with students to develop an academic plan that helps them stay on track to persist and transition to their major of choice. The advisor will work closely with the five Academic Centers to ensure that students successfully and seamlessly transition to their new, major-specific advisor. Other responsibilities include participation in Intervention Retention Strategies for students who have been dropped/ withdrawn from classes, students who have holds, suspended students who are being allowed to continue attending the college and cohort- based projects created within Student Success Hub Advising. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Hours may change based on peak enrollment times and with advanced notice based on MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position will be based primarily at the Lawrence Campus but may be scheduled at the Haverhill Campus based on staffing. Services will be provided on campus, by in-person or virtual appointment. This is a full-time, benefitted position that is part of the MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement. Reports to the Dean of Enrollment Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Specific duties for this position include:

  • Assist students as they progress through the New Student Roadmap; using a case-management approach, provide outreach to students new who are eligible for advising and registration.
  • Provide information to students regarding academic programs, support services and registration for courses during one on one and group advising sessions.
  • Evaluate and process student high school and college transcripts for prerequisites, transfer credit and Accuplacer waivers.
  • Discuss Prior Learning Assessment options with new students (CLEP, Portfolio, Challenge Exams) based on transcripts or other experience.
  • Provide students who apply to NECC with information on the Mass Transfer Policy, including approved A2B Linked and Mapped Programs, Additional Transfer Agreements as well as the Commonwealth Commitment Incentive Program under the Mass Transfer Policy.
  • Assist students who receive military benefits in connecting with the Veteran's Coordinator.
  • Conduct Advising in the Student Success Hub to encourage enrollment and registration of new students and to assist in outreach and retention efforts as deemed appropriate.
  • Participate in organized advising and registration events and advisor trainings.
  • Follow and implement the Academic Standards and Progress policy and procedures. Including monitoring and using interventions (making phone contact, in person meetings, email communications, etc.) for students who are not meeting the necessary requirements.
  • Assist in basic Student Financial Services conversations relevant to the admission and advising process such as payment information, FAFSA information, Academic Appeals, and the student's completion rate percentage when applicable.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff regarding new student advising procedures.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of training workshops for faculty, staff and students.
  • Provide information about and refer students to appropriate campus resources, including, but not limited to, Academic Centers, the PACE Program, Career Services, Tutoring Services, Academic Coaching, Center for Accessibility Resources and Serves as needed.
  • Provide students with information, when appropriate, on community agencies as found on the NECC Student Support website and/or referring to the Community Referral Advisor, Coordinator of Community Referral, or through a Care and Concern Outreach Team form.
  • Assist at college-wide orientations and enrollment events.
  • Assist with projects and college-wide initiatives as assigned.
  • Will use Banner, Degree Works, EAB Navigate, and other software as applicable.

Job Requirements:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in education, counseling, human services or related field is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development.
  • Candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, adaptable and flexibility are essential.
  • Must have the ability to be flexible in the hours available to work.
  • Ability to relate and work well, with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
  • Working knowledge of PC applications and BANNER Students Information Systems or related systems required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a community college environment
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population

GRADE AND SALARY: 
Anticipated salary range is $59,244 to $62,262 (Pay Grade 5) annually with complete fringe benefit package. Complete fringe benefit package including competitive health insurance, free dental insurance, basic life insurance, long-term disability insurance, paid sick, vacation and personal leave, educational benefits for employee/spouse/dependents, and excellent retirement benefits. Actual salary calculated in compliance with MCCC/MTA classification system. Transcripts will be required at the time of hire.
