Job Description

Summary Description:
San Bernardino Valley College invites applications for a full-time tenure track position teaching Accounting . The principal responsibility of an Accounting Instructor is to teach a variety of accounting courses in accordance with established course outlines. Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors are also expected to serve on district and college committees, participate in campus extra-curricular activities, maintain contact with business, industry, and professional organizations for the purpose of keeping instructional programs current with advances in occupational or academic field, participate in professional development to enhance instructional and technical skills, and assess various learning outcomes.

Examples of Duties:
Duties also include sharing institutional responsibilities, which are of value to the department, division, college and/or District including actively participating in the spirit of shared governance in department, division, college and District institutional responsibilities. Such responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring, class schedule preparation, budget development, performance appraisals, mentorship, student recruitment and retention, curriculum and program development and evaluation, program review, club advising, committees, accreditation, articulation, and other duties as assigned.

  • In addition, instructors are expected to maintain a commitment and sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff, and uphold a commitment to integrating equity practices in the College's Instructional Programs. It is also expected that the successful candidate will possess knowledge of high impact student practices. Accounting faculty are also expected to share the duties of teaching during day-time, evenings, weekends, online, and off-campus and have the ability to teach in areas such as principles of accounting, intermediate accounting, advanced accounting, cost accounting, auditing, government and non-profit accounting, taxation, data analytics, cloud computing, and/or forensic accounting without additional substantive training or study.
  • Standard duties expected of all faculty include development, evaluation and improvement of curricula, managing course content, not limited to syllabi and course textbooks, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's in accountancy or business administration with an accounting concentration

    OR
  • Bachelor's in business with accounting emphasis or business administration with accounting emphasis or economics with an accounting emphasis AND Master's in business, business administration, business education, economics, taxation, finance or the equivalent (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in accountancy or business administration with accounting concentration, with a CPA license is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

Desired Qualifications:
Ability to demonstrate the knowledge, and skills to teach in areas such as principles of accounting, financial accounting, managerial accounting, computerized accounting, payroll accounting, bookkeeping and tax, Intermediate accounting, advanced accounting, cost accounting, auditing, government and non-profit accounting, taxation, data analytics, cloud computing, and/or forensic accounting. Modes of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof. In 2023-2024, the department anticipates that the normal mode of instruction will be in-person

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and use multiple teaching methods (e.g., computer assisted instruction, hybrid, face-to-face, multimedia demonstration, lecture-lab and self-paced formats, individualized and online instruction) that address retention and success of a diverse, multicultural population and accommodate a wide variety of learning styles. An Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or related professional certification. Knowledge of current basic workplace skills for accounting and business professionals (i.e. accounting core competencies). Working knowledge of and experience with student learning outcomes and assessment. Experience in teaching and mentoring students from historically marginalized communities (i.e. student populations similar to SBVC student demographics) Experience in developing new curricula including interdisciplinary courses and/or training material. Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges and universities
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency.


Employment Requirements
The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:

  • Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
  • Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment
  • Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule)
  • Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).
