Job Summary
The Early Childhood Education Mentor (ECE Mentor) develops positive and empowering relationships with Early Childhood Education (ECE) students. The Mentor serves as a resource from recruitment through graduation or transfer to a baccalaureate program. The ECE mentor plays a significant role in supporting the Early Childhood Education initiatives at Kishwaukee College.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • A strong commitment to the mission of the community college.
  • Demonstrated excellent administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students, college employees accrediting agencies and the public.
  • Skill in working effectively in a team environment with a customer service focus.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the community.
  • Proficiency with use of e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software and use of the Internet.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in early childhood education required, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience that provide the required knowledge and skills.
  • Experience in working with diverse student populations.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Effective organizational and communication skills.
  • A collaborative style with commitment to serving students and initiative to solve problems.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) language skills preferred.
  • Masters degree in Early Childhood Education experience preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in an early childhood education program preferred.

Physical Demands
  • Work is normally performed in a general office setting
  • Work is conducted in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions
  • This position requires light physical activity and movement

Description of Job Duty
  • Serves as the main point of contact and support for students pursuing Early Childhood Education credentials.
  • Provides Admissions, Registration, Student Advising, Financial Aid, and Career Services support to all prospective and current students.
  • Provides referrals to Disability Services as needed.
  • Provides necessary information to students such as registration dates, drop/add deadlines, college policies and ECACE scholarship information and deadlines.
  • Mentors a caseload of assigned students through a proactive advising model, while monitoring student progress toward academic and career goals.
  • Maintain accurate tracking data and case notes for each assigned student.
  • Compile and maintain data for governmental and institutional reports (ECACE, ICCB, HLC, grant applications, etc.).
  • Ensures students have the information they need to maximize credits, enroll, and to
complete their certificate or degree.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Kishwaukees early childhood program and Gateways credentials.
  • Assist students in developing critical skills needed for success such as goal setting, development of study skills, time management, balancing the demands of college with work/life, and career planning.
  • Responsible for recruitment activities on and off campus such as presentations, job fairs, expos, information sessions, site visits and follow up on ECE student inquiries.
  • Develop, implement, and assess retention initiatives.
  • Develop relationships within the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity, and with external navigators to support students.
  • Develop relationships with institutional faculty/staff, other agency professionals, and mentors at other institutions to support student referrals and information sharing.
  • Serve on institutional and departmental committees and attend various campus meetings.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as well as state and national professional organizations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
