Essential Job Duties

The very berry lab is a highly integrated research, teaching and extension lab in Raleigh, NC, located in the Department of Horticultural Science at North Carolina State University. We focus on the improvement of grape and strawberry production systems. We value team-work, compassion, dedication and academic freedom. We seek for a person who is a team player, wants to integrate into a vibrant group of motivated undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, administrators and communication specialists, who all work on the same goal: improve berry and grape production across the Southeast.

The ideal candidate has previous experience in viticulture, and at the same time has extension experience, or is open to learn and work in extension. We seek a highly motivated, organized, and independent incumbent familiar with the grape and wine industry. The candidate will be instrumental to advance our viticulture extension and research program, and to strengthen the connections between stakeholders and extension. The candidate selected will report to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Mark Hoffmann), and will assist with the leadership of a range of projects designed to bring excellence to the North Carolina grape and wine industry. We are looking for an excellent communicator and efficient multitasker capable of developing and coordinating multidisciplinary viticulture project, navigating academic and industry partners across the US.

The successful candidate needs to develop and manage a viticulture extension program for North Carolina, with a focus on European-style wine grapes. The candidate is expected to further develop an applied and needs-drive research program. The candidate will develop peer-reviewed publications, find extramural funding, and mentor staff/students. The incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:

Extension (45%): Develop and lead a hybrid viticulture education program for North Carolina. This involves, but is not limited to, 
  • Video, webinar and in-person education on cultural management, disease and pest-management of European-style wine grapes
  • Site and cultivar selection, pruning, training, canopy and floor management  
  • Education on disease management, e.g. Pierces Disease or sour rot 
  • Serve as additional viticulture contact point for extension agents and growers in North Carolina. 

Research (40%): 
  • Develop, fund, coordinate and conduct selected viticulture research activities. 
  • Develop and expand collaborative networks to acquire extramural funding. 
  • Evaluating grape cultivar performance in North Carolina. 
  • Collecting, analyzing, and presenting data. 
  • Completing reports and preparing grant proposals. 
  • Networking with domestic and international partners. 
  • Publishing results in peer-reviewed and trade journals. 

Mentoring (10%): We expect the person to co-advise together with the PI the lab internal viticulture team and serve as a mentor to undergraduate and graduate students.

Service (5%): Serve on university committees and as advisor to grower associations.

This is a highly interdisciplinary position that requires flexibility, ca. 20% travel (in state) and the availability to meet in –person as well as virtually with stakeholders. We further emphasize team spirit, professional development, and the opportunity to build networks in the industry.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • PhD degree in viticulture, enology, or a related field, or a relevant M.S. with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • This position requires prior working experience with grapes.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with grapes.
  • The willingness to work with strawberries.
  • Excellent attention to detail, oral, written and social communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to develop peer-reviewed publications.
  • Ability to find extramural funding.
  • Ability to mentor staff/students in the lab.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior working experience with European-style wine grapes.
  • Experience in extension and outrearch are highly desired.
  • Bi-lingual language skills (English, Spanish)
  • Willingness to travel
  • Experience working with various and different partnerships to achieve goals is highly desirable.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid drivers license and the ability to obtain an NC drivers licence within 60 days of hire.
  • The candidate needs to acquire and maintain a pesticide applicators license. A pesticide applicators license should be obtain within 6 months of hire.

The position requires frequent travel, and the maintenance of a NC drivers license is necessary. Use of State vehicle(s) available.
