Position Summary

The Network Engineer provides network and voice system installation, problem determination, resolution, configuration, and needs analysis to support the use of technology by faculty, staff, and students.

 

The engineer provides support for all aspects of the various University data center facilities and communications closets; supports operations and administration of voice and data network components, located on all campus locations.; and works with other staff including application development and security.

 

They will also be responsible for administrative tasks, projects and supporting other IT related functions.

 

Essential Functions         

Network Infrastructure

  • Responsible for implementing technologies designed by the infrastructure team
  • Configures network switches, VPN, optical hardware and SDN systems
  • Researches new technologies in support of data, VoIP, conferencing systems and WiFi
  • Deploys wireless network infrastructures and makes recommendations on systems enhancements for optimal operation
  • Recommends IT solutions to business and management problems
  • Supports the universities building management systems
  • Works with the Facilities Engineering group on implementing technologies into new or renovated structures

 

Network Maintenance

  • Monitors and analyze data to improve system performance
  • Monitors network usage and security issues.
  • Deploys patches to mitigate any threat to systems
  • Responds to issues affecting the network architecture
  • Supports ticket resolution associated to the network architecture
  • Supports work and tickets associated to the operation of the firewall
  • Supervises student workers

 

Essential Engineer Functions

General responsibilities

  • Project implementation and support
  • WiFi enhancements and support

 

Analysis

  • Make use of SUMO logic to analyze captured data from disparate network systems
  • Support security team with data from firewall and network equipment
  • Use measuring and diagnostic tools to test and adjust networking equipment
  • Support capacity planning
  • Utilize data to modify and support modifications to the wireless network

 

Technology

  • WiFi and cellular
  • Optical systems (Passive and active DWDM)
  • Support of OSPF and other network protocols
  • VoIP and other realtime applications
  • SDN
  • IoT integration
  • Laser and long haul rf systems

General

  • Undertakes preventative measures and implementing, maintaining and monitoring network security
  • Supports real-time video applications
  • Installs, supports and maintains new switch hardware and software infrastructure
  • Evolves ITs performance management program into a strategic talent management program
  • Monitors network usage and security issues
  • Recommends IT solutions to business and management problems
  • Analyses and resolves faults
  • Works closely with other departments/organizations and collaborates with other IT staff
  • Provides training and technical support for users with varying levels of IT knowledge and competence
  • Undertakes preventative measures and implements, maintains and monitors network security
  • Plans and implements future IT developments and undertakes project work
  • Supports Voice over IP systems and endpoints
  • Undertakes project work to support engineers
  • Assumes responsibility for Network ticket resolution.
  • Supervises student workers
  • Monitors the use of the web by students, faculty and staff

 

General Engineer Functions

  • Functional expert, responsible for planning and executing major aspects/components of projects
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to team members and work processes
  • Contributes to evaluating and making recommendations on resource requirements on projects
  • Validates alternative ways of gathering data
  • Evaluates alternatives and recommends solutions
  • Communicates status, progress, and impact to management
  • Resolves issues in a timely manner
  • Participates in weekend coverage
  • Identifies current industry trends
  • Demonstrates understanding of complex transactions and related configuration options
  • Develops work plans for components of engagements
  • Executes complex infrastructure build activities (e.g. LAN, WAN, Server, Database, Desktop)
  • Identifies critical success factors to test plan
  • Displays awareness of technology tool trends and potential applicability

 

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience         

  • Bachelors Degree; or in lieu of the degree, a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

 

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills       

  • Working knowledge of network infrastructure
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

 

Preferred Qualifications  

Demonstrated expertise in:

  • Supporting complex systems architectures, specifications and applications
  • Resource acquisition and management
  • Execution of project plans and delivery of results
  • Analytical/problem solving and technical skills
  • Customer service
  • Ability to interact professionally with staff, faculty and students
  • Work experience and validated training with IT certification will be considered.

 

Minimum Starting Salary: $69,500

 

Maximum Starting Salary: $86,875

 

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
