Academic Advisor

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in the classification, however, employees may perform other related duties not listed and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee.
  • Provide general academic guidance to students helping them choose courses to meet their academic and vocational goals.
  • Prepare statistical and narrative reports.
  • Prepare and make student orientation presentations.
  • Participate in recruiting and advising students.
  • Assist with the coordination of outreach and retention events.
  • Develop and maintain student records.
  • Assist in the coordination of services and programs.
  • Perform other related duties as requested or assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
 
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Associate degree or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum two years of experience working in an office environment using computerized databases, spreadsheets and word processing programs. Specific positions may be designated as bilingual (English/Spanish) or have specific clearance processes required by other agencies. Possess the sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic background of community college students.
 
Desirable Qualifications:
  • One year of paid experience or internship providing educational planning assistance or guidance to college students.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Personal:

  • Ability to relate with patience, poise, and tact to students and staff;
  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students.
  • Be a team player in a busy educational environment with an emphasis on public service.
Special Licenses/Certifications:
The following may be required for some positions:
  • Valid California driver license.
  • Acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability by the Districts insurance carrier.
  • Maintains up-to-date certificates required in the course of the job.
Knowledge of:
  • Computers and software to access support programs and relevant websites.
  • Methods of tracking and recording student progress.
  • Basic office equipment and computer programs.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Computerized word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, internet and email programs as well as use of other common office machines.
  • Basic math required to calculate grade point average and conversion of quarter units to semester units.
Ability to:
  • Be efficient and well organized.
  • Meet one-on-one with students to implement education plans.
  • Meet the public, students and staff members cordially and effectively.
  • Learn admissions processes, registration procedures and academic support services.
  • Community effectively with students and staff, including group presentations, by telephone, face-to-face and in writing.
  • Learn computerized programs to assist students.
  • Stay current on transfer processes, Taft College admissions requirements, and other areas to assist students with their short and long-term goals.
  • Learn proper use of college catalogs, web-based advising information, laws, codes, regulations, rules, and policies.
  • Administer and proctor assessment tests.
  • Work independently from oral instruction.
  • Locate resource materials to assist students in planning academic and vocational goals.
  • Meet assigned schedule.
  • Learn academic rules and regulations, and student codes of conduct.
  • Handle academic materials in a sensitive and confidential manner.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed files.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
May require over-time or evening hours throughout the year. Work is generally performed indoors but may involve traveling to complete assignments or for outreach, recruitment, research, workshops, training, or meetings.
 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to see for purposes of reading labels, instructions, rules and policies.
  • Ability to hear and communicate to receive and give instructions.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds.
  • Ability to reach in all directions.
  • Ability to drive to off-campus locations.
  • Manual dexterity to handle and operate materials and equipment.

Environment:
A busy student services office located on a community college campus serving a diverse student population with an emphasis on student success. Duties may be on campus or at assigned locations off-campus. Maybe assigned day, evenings or weekends. Overtime or additional work may be assigned. Travel to off-campus sites may be required.
 

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for the position is a Range 19 on the Classified Salary Schedule with a range of $24.63-$32.87 per hour. This is a full time, 12-month position. This position is eligible for participation in West Kern Community College District's comprehensive fringe benefits program that includes District paid medical, dental and vision coverage for employees and their dependents, as well as a generous vacation plan. Employees are eligible for membership in either CalPERS or CalSTRS retirement systems.
