We are currently seeking a Police Telecommunications Cadet, who will advance the institutions proud tradition of excellence in academics, student life and community service.
The Opportunity
You: If you are qualified for the Police Telecommunicator position but lack the formal training and licensing, this entry level position will prepare you for a career in law enforcement.
Your mission: You will be an active member of our 24/7 Police Telecommunications Center. Within twelve (12) months of your original hire date we will count on you to successfully pass three (3) Texas Commission on Law Enforcement courses and licensing examinations.
A typical day: You may kick off the day with a brief staff meeting, where you discuss a professional development and training program where you have received information critical to your job functions. On shift, you receive, evaluate and send appropriate, timely police department assistance on emergency and non-emergency calls received from the college community. Youll spend some time in the afternoon you may enter real time data into the police computer-aided dispatch system (CAD).

SUMMARY
An entry level position for applicants who but for formal training and licensing are otherwise qualified for the position of Police Telecommunicator.
Serve as primary communications contact for Houston Community College (HCC) community and police department employees. Receive, evaluate, and disseminate law enforcement information. Maintain accurate and up to date report files, including the handling of highly sensitive and confidential information. This position is licensed and regulated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The Houston Community College Police Department Dispatch Center operates 24-hours, 7 days a week. Individuals hired for this position are required to work any assigned shift including weekends, days, evenings, nights, and holidays. This position also involves working extended workdays outside of regular working hours and on-call status.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Serve as primary contact for the HCC community needing police department assistance via multi-modal communications; radio, telephone, e-mail, and electronic record management systems.
Coordinate with other agencies for emergency response to college facilities, 24 hours a day, seven (7) days per week.
Receive, evaluate and send appropriate, timely police department assistance on emergency and non-emergency calls received from the college community.
Maintain 24-hour system-wide capability to coordinate notifications and communications needed in event of emergencies or disruptions of facility operations.
Receive, evaluate, and disseminate information received via the National and Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems, The National and Texas Crime Information Centers, and local law enforcement databases in an accurate and timely manner.
Serve as primary contact for police department employees needing assistance and information during both routine and emergency situations.
Maintain accurate and up to date police and security report files, including the handling of highly sensitive and confidential information.
Maintain a computerized active daily duty record reflecting officer and duty location assignment.
Operate multi-modal mass-notification system relaying prompt and accurate emergency information to students and staff.
Accurate, timely entry of real time data into the police computer-aided dispatch system (CAD).
QUALIFICATIONS
(1) Minimum education requirements:
(A) a high school diploma from a school accredited by the Texas Education Agency; or
(B) a high school equivalency certificate from a program approved by the Texas Education Agency;
(2) The individual has been subjected to a search of local, state, and national records
to disclose any criminal record;
(A) is not currently charged with any criminal offense for which conviction would be a bar to certification;
(B) has never been on court-ordered supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years from the date of the order;
(C) has never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years;
(3) Has never been convicted in any court of an offense involving family violence as
defined under Chapter 71, Texas Family Code;
(4) Has never received a dishonorable or other discharge based on misconduct
which bars future military service; and
(5) Is a United States citizen.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Employees in this position will be scheduled to work rotating shifts in a 24/7 environment. Employees will be expected to work holidays, nights and/or weekends to meet staffing and scheduling requirements.
Ability to multitask, coordinate simultaneous mental, manual and visual activities in a fast-paced work environment.
Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively, and relay observed details in a prompt and accurate manner.
Ability to communicate effectively (English) with a diverse population. Additional languages preferred.
Working knowledge of computer technology and equipment required, with working knowledge of the following preferred: Computer-Aided Dispatch Systems (preferably Crimestar), Windows 7, MS Office Suite 2007 or higher and DPS OMNIXX database. Must be a proficient typist – computerized typing evaluation may be required.
Ability to exercise proper judgment in interpreting and adapting guidelines, such as policies, regulations, and precedents
This position requires the satisfactory completion of a detailed work history and criminal background investigation by law enforcement to determine the applicants ability to meet minimum Texas Department of Public Safety and TCLEOSE qualifications regarding police telecommunications employment
Per HCC Policy C: 4.7 Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace, a drug and/or alcohol test is required if a conditional job offer is made.
