THE OPPORTUNITY:

Department/Division Introduction

The Advisement Department is looking for a full-time Academic Counselor for the Advisement Department, reporting to the Senior Assistant Director of Advisement. Academic Counselors promote student success in support of and in accordance with the Colleges mission statement, program policies and procedures, and established goals and objectives of the Student Affairs Division.

This position may be based at either the North Hudson Campus in Union City, or the Journal Square Campus in Jersey City and travel between campuses may be required. While the Office of Advisement operates during traditional business hours, staff may be asked to support occasional College-wide evening or weekend events.

Summary of Duties

What you would be doing in this role:

  • Provide students with academic advising, major exploration, transfer opportunities, educational programming, and course registration assistance.
  • Assist incoming students with transition to the College by engaging in conversations about time management, study skills and test taking strategies.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, data, and reports across various platforms to contribute toward the Colleges Student Success Plan.
  • Integrate data-informed decision-making and evidence-based practices into daily work.
  • Provide resources, referrals, and information to assist students in navigating the college.
  • Create and maintain cross-campus relationships to provide referrals and opportunities for engagement.
  • Participate in college committees and events to increase visibility for the program, gain knowledge, and build partnerships across the College.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by departmental leadership.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

What youll need to succeed:

  • Clear Communication Style: Superior verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Masters degree: Required in Counseling, Higher Education, Social Work, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Experience: Open to various levels of experience in higher education but working with a culturally and socioeconomically diverse student population is highly desirable. Hudson County Community College supports a diverse and traditionally underrepresented student population, and we consider this an important element of the work we do at the College.
  • Technology Skills: Proficient in various computer software programs and SaaS including Microsoft Office suite, Airtable, Mongoose, Calendly, Ellucian-Colleague or similar higher education platforms.
  • Relational skills: Relationship building is a central part of the role, so strong interpersonal and active listening skills are essential. It is important that you balance having a supportive ear with the ability to identify needs, so students are able to realize their personal and educational goals.
  • Creativity: A penchant for out of the box thinking and creative problem-solving will be an asset in this role.
  • Additional Skills: Collaboration, flexibility, innovation, strategic thinking, and a positive attitude.

  • Bi-lingual ability: Our College has a linguistically diverse student population, so while not required, for this position the ability to read and write in Spanish, or another language, is preferred.

More than 90% of HCCCs students receive scholarships, grants, and loans to finance their education, and the Colleges extensive financial aid program helps connect students with the resources they need. Hudson County Community College has three campuses. The largest campus is located at the heart of Jersey Citys Journal Square, which is approximately 20 minutes from New York City. The College has a North Hudson Campus, located in Union City, New Jersey and an additional location at the Hudson County Schools of Technology in Secaucus, New Jersey. The College offers 70 degree and certificate programs and more than 300-day, evening, and weekend courses throughout its three-campus network.

HCCC has two campus Libraries that provide welcoming common spaces that encourage exploration, creation, and collaboration between students, faculty, and a broader community. Our resources include a collection comprised of over 60,000 print and online books, 130 online databases, and approximately 67,000 periodicals (mostly online), nearly 2,000 DVDs, and a number of select streaming videos. In support of our many English Language Learners, our ESL collection offers a rich array of fiction and non-fiction books categorized by reading level to meet a variety of needs.

The Glen Gabert Library, located on the Journal Square campus, is the home of the Hudson County Community College Archive Collection which offers access to the rich history of HCCC and its impact on Jersey City and the surrounding community. The North Hudson Campus Library is located at our Union City location.

The libraries are open seven days a week while offering a variety of digital technologies that offer pathways to learning and content acquisition. Some of the available technologies include Makerspace facilities for podcasting, 3D printing, crafts, and more, a combination of PC and Macintosh computers, scanners, printers, virtual reality headsets, learning hubs, and prayer and meditation rooms.

The College boasts several signature programs, including a nationally recognized Culinary Arts Institute and Nursing Program. The Colleges Culinary Arts Institute is one of only three programs in the New York Metropolitan region to hold accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation. The Culinary Arts Institute features state-of-the-art facilities and a hands-on program that prepares students for a range of careers in the hospitality industry. The College recently announced the dedication of the Bloomberg Finance Lab, which provides students with real world experience to prepare them for employment in banks, corporations, and government agencies.

A leader in workforce development, HCCC hosted The Aspen Institutes Workforce Leadership Academy, which was the first to be offered in partnership with a community college. The Hudson County Workforce Leadership Academy was funded through a combination of public and private donors that included JPMorgan Chase, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the County of Hudson, the LeFrak Family, and Mack-Cali.

Pay: $53,955.51 - $91,724.36 per year
