Instructional Lab Technician-Fine Arts (Ceramics)

Job Description


Responsibilities:


Under the direction of the Dean of Arts, Communication Design and Media, perform complex technical work in an instructional lab environment in a highly technical and complex subject area such as ceramics, photography, sculpture or other fine arts area.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  1. Load and fire kilns.
  2. Prepare clay, glazes and other materials as requested.
  3. Supervise the operation and maintenance of a complex instructional lab environment; train and provide work direction to students and student assistant as assigned.
  4. Assist instructors, staff and students in the safe use of a variety of specialized equipment, materials and supplies in an instructional lab setting.
  5. Order, receive, catalog and store supplies, materials and equipment; work with faculty to find items requested; maintain inventories assuring that adequate quantities are available for instructional use.
  6. Perform repairs assigned equipment; research and replace obsolete parts with similar replacements of manufacture new parts as necessary; maintain security of facility and equipment.
  7. Maintain lab in a safe, clean and orderly condition; prepare and maintain records and reports as necessary.
  8. Perform related duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:


Bachelors of Arts, Fine Arts (Ceramics) is desirable.

Licenses and Other Requirements:


Must satisfactorily pass a pre-employment physical examination if selected for position.

Working Conditions:


ENVIRONMENT: Instructional lab environment.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Lifting heavy objects. Seeing to observe students and lab equipment. Speaking to communicate instructions. Standing and walking for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate and assemble lab equipment.

HAZARDS: Chemical fumes, noise and dust.

Salary:


Range 24, Steps 1-6, $5,202.92-$6,582.76. Initial placement for external applicants is Step 1. An excellent benefits package which includes medical, vision, dental, retirement, vacation, generous sick leave package, and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.

Work Schedule:


Monday-Friday: 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (Approximately). Work schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the school.

Successful candidate may be assigned to any of the campus sites (Chula Vista, National City, Otay Mesa, and/or San Ysidro).
