About COA:

College of The Albemarle, located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is the state's first community college, founded in 1961. We strive to transform lives by inspiring and empowering individuals and communities of our seven-county service area. Through our four locations, we provide quality college transfer and career and technical education to residents in northeast North Carolina.

Description

 

Funding is contingent upon annual approval of State General Fund Appropriations. The project period is based on the five-year grant cycle. The intention is to achieve outcomes that will allow selected colleges to sustain the position beyond the grant period.

 


FLSA: Paraprofessional, non-exempt

The Career Coach is a partnership between College of The Albemarle and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. The purpose of the Career Coach is to cultivate programs and services for the high school learners, so that individuals can successfully enter and advance in a career path.

The Career Coach receives supervision from the Director, Admissions and Recruitment.

 

Examples of Duties

 

Career Exploration:

  • Support outreach efforts involving high school learners to raise career awareness of opportunities and assist in enrollment of high school learners on the college level
  • Support students' efforts for career pathways
  • Coordinate events designed to promote awareness of career pathways
  • Work with high school/college personnel to prepare information related to career pathways for distribution to students and parents
  • Follow a communication plan to ensure consistent communication with students, faculty, staff, parents, etc.
  • Organize college campus/industry tours

Advising:

  • Maintain contact with select advisees using a proactive advising model
  • Assist with academic/career advising for high school learners
  • Maintain accurate and adequate student records to assist in academic/career advising of high school learners
  • Provide information to college personnel regarding course needs for high school students
  • Responsible for knowledge of information related to High School, Community Colleges, Military Pathways policies and procedures, as well as information related to community workforce development resources to provide students with timely information and guidance, assisting students in making informed decisions

Support Services:

  • Provide supportive interventions to help students succeed in high school/college courses; provide academic success strategies to facilitate successful transition into college environment
  • Assist in communicating policy and procedure information to students and parents
  • Conducts workshops and classroom visits with enrolled students at the high school and enhanced partnership to inform and instruct the students concerning Pathways requirements

 

Typical Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • 1 year in the past 5 years in a related field such as industry-related career development; coordinator of work-based learning; as a career/academic advisor; or in school counseling

Preferred:

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships within an education setting; plan, organize, and implement programs and services; and provide tracking and assessment to ensure quality services
  • Working knowledge of Datatel/Colleague
  • Working knowledge of PowerSchool
  • Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of career services
  • Knowledge and practical application of student/career services and progression
  • Possess excellent skills for planning, organizing, implementing new initiatives
  • Ability to establish, cultivate, and maintain positive/collaborative relationships with colleagues, students, peers, etc.
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral) in a variety of setting with people from diverse backgrounds, educational levels, and age groups
  • Working knowledge of MS Office and relevant applications, and internet platforms
  • Possess a working knowledge of secondary and postsecondary education
  • Independently perform complex tasks and prioritize multiple projects
  • Ability to foster a collaborative team-based work environment with a willingness to see tasks through to completion
