Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Mt. Hood Community College is hiring for two (2) Full-Time Biology Instructors, one in Microbiology and Biology, and one in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. You will have the opportunity to specify which position(s) you are interested in applying for when you complete an application.

Instructor - Microbiology and Biology
Provides high quality biology instruction, primarily in microbiology and one or more of the following: human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, cellular biology or molecular biology, including developmental, transfer, or career-technical courses. Participates in curriculum development, educational assessments, and course alignments; maintains classrooms and labs in compliance with safety requirements, and reports any lab equipment or infrastructure maintenance needs. Works with the dean and colleagues to improve student learning experiences.

Instructor - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Provides high quality general biology instruction, primarily in ecology, and evolutionary biology, including developmental, transfer, or career-technical courses. Participates in curriculum development, educational assessments, and course alignments; maintains classrooms and labs in compliance with safety requirements, and reports any lab equipment or infrastructure maintenance needs. Works with the dean and colleagues to improve student learning experiences

Essential Duties:
  • Instructs students in a classroom, lab, online, learning center, or other setting as appropriate.
  • Teaches a range of biology courses, including developmental, transfer, or career-technical courses.
  • Creates a learning environment for students inclusive of diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Convenes classes, labs, and examinations on time and as scheduled.
  • Provides opportunities for course-related student interactions before or after class, virtually, in person, or through office hours where facilities and schedules permit.
  • Adheres to all College polices, practices, and timelines related to evaluation and grading.
  • Structures classes and curriculum to correspond with the overall program objectives; prepares clear objectives for students each course. Maintains and revises curriculum to maintain currency.
  • Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials as appropriate.
    Incorporates the latest classroom technology, when available and appropriate, into instructional activities.
  • Participates in, and collects data for, educational assessment as directed by the department, division, and College.
  • Ensures and emphasizes safe working and classroom conditions and practices. Provides for the safety of student and staff and the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate. Reports any lab equipment or infrastructure maintenance needs.
  • Understands and abides by College policies and regulations and other policies, procedures and materials as required or directed.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff from other departments and divisions to promote communication, coordinate programs, and support student success.
  • Prepares clear learning outcomes for each course and informs students of learning outcomes in a course syllabus.
  • Participates in college service and activities outside direct instruction, such as registration, curriculum development, advising, strategic planning, and educational assessment.
  • Supports student recruitment, placement, and retention.
  • Keeps professionally current by participating in professional development and other activities; maintains current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation.
  • Maintains active liaison with high schools, universities, business and industry or external agencies and assist the dean with program advisory committees as appropriate.
  • Attends division, department, and committee meetings and in-service programs.

 

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Instructor - Microbiology and Biology
Minimum Qualifications


  • Master's degree or higher in biology, with an emphasis in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, nutrition, or related field; or a master's degree or higher and 24 graduate-credit hours in biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, nutrition, or related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching practices and service activities
Desired Qualifications
  • Teaching experience at the community college level
  • Instructional experience or formal training in microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, cellular, or molecular biology and/or nutrition.
Instructor - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in biology, with an emphasis in ecology, evolutionary biology, or related field; or a master's degree or higher and 24 graduate-credit hours in ecology, evolutionary biology, or related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching practices and service activities
Desired Qualifications
  • Teaching experience at the community college level
  • Instructional experience or formal training in ecology, evolutionary biology, or related field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Ability to work evenings and a flexible schedule as needed
  • Ability to teach online courses and utilize necessary technology
  • Ability to manage and engage students from diverse backgrounds and skill levels in the classroom, laboratory, and field environment
  • Ability to use high impact teaching practices in a variety of courses.
  • Ability to coordinate and budget for lab purchases and instructional supply needs
  • Ability to manage student outcomes related to all classes taught
  • Ability to teach courses in accordance with college catalog, schedule of classes, course outlines, course syllabi, and any departmental guidelines
  • Knowledge of appropriate teaching methods and documentation

Work is typically performed in a normal office environment, classroom, and laboratory (inside and field) setting.


Salary

Salary placement will be based on applicable education and/or years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant education and full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past education and/or experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
