Position Summary

This position is primarily focused and responsible for assisting the counseling and advisement area of the Division of Student Services to assist students in achieving their social, personal and academic goals in the community college setting, pursue immediate employment in their career areas or continue education at a four-year institution.

  • Ability to work and communicate with a variety of people with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to utilize email systems to communicate information.

  • Assist applicants, prospective students, and enrolled students with their educational planning and life goals, including: registration, course selection, advisement, career and social life decisions at the community college.
  • Assist in the selection of a transfer institution and identify procedures and equivalent Bishop State courses the student should complete prior to transfer.
  • Develop and implement intervention strategies for retention.
  • Instruct/facilitate Orientation ORI101 “Strong Start” Courses.
  • Provide study skills materials.
  • Conduct interesting and beneficial campus-wide workshop/seminars for students.
  • Assist applicants, prospective students, and students with planning desired goals with primary emphasis on selection of an academic program and its parameters to meet the goal.
  • Assist with career placement, dual enrollment and help identify non-traditional and early college prospects.
  • Assist the Student Services Division with program activities, focusing on the goals of each area.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of Division events and student activities.
  • Familiarize new students to the Learning Assistance Center.
  • Assist with the coordination and facilitation of all placement testing.
  • Assist with pre-registration and registration duties.
  • Advise and communicate regularly with assigned students and utilize the customer relationship management system each semester through personal appointments, telephone conversations, and/or written correspondence (including but not limited to e-mail).
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the STARS, BORIS, Canvas, and other related software and assist students in its use.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Alabama Core Requirements developed by Alabama Articulation and General Studies Committee.
  • Review the Bishop State Catalog annually to become familiar with changes affecting prospective and current student enrollment.
  • Maintain knowledge of financial aid opportunities for prospective and current students.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of other college policies and procedures including academic support, and student activities.
  • Work with other departments to remain up to date on processes and program changes that may affect students or the advising area.
  • Maintain a presence in the Advising Center on a daily basis.
  • Participate in annual planning and evaluation sessions in support of the Colleges vision, statement of purpose, and institutional goals and objectives.
  • Seek out, participate, and present at professional development events related to the position.
  • Have a focus on being friendly and patient in responding to customer needs.
  • Have a willingness to maintain flexibility in order to meet customer needs.
  • Have a willingness and desire to learn new things and apply that learning.
  • Work a flexible schedule on a rotating basis.
  • Assume other responsibilities as needed or directed by the Director of Advising and Student Success, Dean of Students, and/or President.

Salary: ACCS Salary Schedule –E3-03
Continued employment is contingent upon funding from the grant and is on a non-tenured track.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:


  • A minimum of a Bachelor degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in student support programs.
  • Experience in advising, guiding, or counseling individuals and/or groups.
  • Experience in advising academically under-prepared students.
  • Experience in an educational setting.
  • Documented experience in the use of current educational technologies in the workplace including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Blackboard, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in facilitating placement tests (e.g. Accuplacer).

The Selection Committee will screen all applicants for the position. The Committee will select applicants for in-person interviews which may consist of question/answer session and /or skills assessments.
