Job Description

 

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Upward Bound, the employee provides advising regarding education, career, dual enrollment, and financial aid needs to program participants in the target high schools. The employee develops and conducts workshops and activities contributing to the development and implementation of program goals and objectives.  

POSTING DATE: MARCH 11, 2024

SALARY: 
Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule E3 03 (range: $44,333 - $61,480). This is a grant-funded position. In the event that funds for this position are discontinued, the College shall have the right to discontinue the position. Neither tenure or non-probationary status may be attained in this position. 

ANTICIPATED START DATE: APRIL 15, 2024

The position will be based initially at the Sparks Campus in Eufuala.


More than one position in the same job classification may be filled from the applicants for this position should another vacancy occur during the search process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Upward Bound Advising. The employee provides academic, career, and personal direction to Upward Bound students to aid in the participants successful completion of high school and enrollment in a post-secondary educational program.
 

  1. Assists in the identification and selection of Upward Bound participants.
  2. Prepares and conducts informative workshops in target schools.
  3. Assists Upward Bound participants in completing applications for college admission and financial aid.
  4. Maintains regular contact with target schools regarding Upward Bound participants.
  5. Maintains regular contact with program participants to discuss personal, academic, financial aid, career exploration, or any issues they may by experiencing.
  6. Maintain regular contact with dual enrollment department to assist students with the dual enrollment process, conduct dual enrollment workshops, and monitor participant progress.
  7. Refers program participants to appropriate counseling or support agency as necessary.
  8. Monitor academic progress of participants each grading period through report card checks.
  9. Monitor and keep track of participants ACT scores.
  10. Coordinates with tutors to provide participants with supplemental instruction; schedules study sessions.
  11. Maintain familiarity with postsecondary educational requirements and current career information and trends to properly advise participants on a suitable career path. 

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Upward Bound Cultural Enrichment and Community Involvement. Conducts and participates in programs and events to enhance Upward Bound participant success.
 

  1. Visits all participating target schools and consults with school representatives regularly concerning progress of Upward Bound participants. 
  2. Attends college tours, educational trips, and cultural enrichment activities; works within budget.
  3. Conducts recruitment activities within the community (provides information packets, visits target schools, attends open houses and community events, and collaborates with local agencies). 
  4. Participates in planning and implementing summer enrichment programs. 
  5. Provides public relations, promotional activities, and coordination with WCC departments, target school personnel, and community organizations.
  6. Assists in identifying and selecting Upward Bound participants.
  7. Gathers up to date information on colleges and universities, financial aid, scholarships, careers, etc.
  8. Attends conferences, workshops, and other professional development activities.
  9. Monitors school system calendars for upcoming events.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations.  Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.

  1. Reports to work on time, at appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  2. Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.
  3. Performs a productive full day's work.
  4. Ensures that service to students and the general public is top priority.
  5. Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  6. Adheres to all College and System policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications

 

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.
  2. Two years of full-time experience working with low-income, first-generation clientele is required.
  3. Current and valid driver's license with the ability to travel is required.
  4. Ability to work non-standard hours and extended hours as necessary is required 
  5. Two years of experience in a secondary or post-secondary educational setting is preferred.

 

ADVISORY COMMITTEE:  The President will appoint an Advisory and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff.  This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interviews, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration.  From all the applications received, an advisory committee will select the applicants to be interviewed.  
 
Applicants must travel at their own expense for interviews that are conducted in person.

Employment verification letter(s) verifying confirming two years of full-time experience working with low-income, first-generation clientele.  Letter(s) must include employment dates and job title and be on official letterhead with an authorized personnel signature.  If an employment verification cannot be obtained, i.e. business is no longer in operation, an applicant may submit copies of appointment letters or contracts or pay stubs or W-2 forms to verify the minimum required two years of experience.
  5. Appropriate transcript identifying the applicant, institution, date degree conferred, and verifying the applicant has received the minimum of a bachelor's degree. Transcripts may be unofficial for the application process but they must identify the applicant, institution, degree earned and the date the degree was conferred. (A copy of the diploma will not suffice).  NOTE: If employed, official transcripts will be required at that time.
