Job Description:

The School of Math, Science, and Engineering seeks a Senior Technical Assistant (WCC). The Senior Technical Assistant is responsible for the following duties:

  • Assemble components prior to physical sciences laboratory classes.  Following conclusion of lab activities, disassemble and store equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly maintained.  Ensure the regular calibration of equipment and instruments.  Design a maintenance schedule for equipment.
  • Keep an inventory and identify when replacement educational equipment needs to be purchased.  Ensure there are adequate supplies and keep track of when the need arises for reordering.
  • Find items to purchase, coordinate deliveries, store and organize lab equipment.  Review and test incoming equipment to ensure that it meets the needs of the Department.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of labs, lab prep room, and storage areas, for all equipment and science class materials, ensuring adherence to required safety standards.
  • Work with campus IT department to ensure student and faculty computers as well as printers in the labs are properly configured, including any necessary software.
  • Oversee the multimedia equipment in the lab rooms to ensure everything is successfully upgraded by the Media and IT Departments with the latest technology for instruction.
  • Help to maintain many visual displays throughout the Science Building (earthquake demonstrations, minerals, weather station).
  • Help faculty with demonstrations and experiments for class instruction.


Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate must possess a high school or equivalency diploma and at least three years of experience in the field.   

The successful candidate must possess the ability to work effectively with others, including staff, students, and faculty.  Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.  The successful candidate will have good knowledge of principles, practices, terminology, tools and/or equipment used in area of specialization; ability to repair and maintain equipment; ability to give directions to others in the use of laboratory equipment; ability to maintain clerical records involved in operation; ability to use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, and email; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; thoroughness; integrity; accuracy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  An Associate or Bachelor's degree in a related physical sciences field is preferred.


Additional Information:

POSITION EFFECTIVE:   The position will remain open until filled.

WORK SCHEDULE:  Work is located in person in the Science Building of the Valhalla Campus of Westchester Community College.   Flexible starting time; 8am-4pm, 9am-5pm preferred. 

SALARY & BENEFITS:  The starting salary is $51,473.  Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $63,075.  This position is fully grant funded.  Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, a choice of defined benefit or defined contribution pension plan, generous leave benefits, and access to tax sheltered annuities and a deferred compensation plan.
