Established in 1970, SVCC is one of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. The College serves ten counties and one city – the largest community college service region in the state. The College as one Extension Campus located in Keysville, VA, and also has five Educational Centers located across the service area. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate degrees. SVCC is dedicated to the belief that all citizens should be given an opportunity to acquire an educational foundation which develops and extends their skills and knowledge. SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the states capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.

Southside Virginia Community College is seeking a motivated Executive Director of Institutional Advancement for the College. The Executive Director of Institutional Advancement serves as the Chief Development and Public Relations Officer and oversees the areas of marketing and grants. This position reports to the President. The successful candidate must be committed to our mission to provide quality education to a diverse constituency.

The successful candidate will reside on our Christanna campus in Alberta, however, will have college wide responsibilities serving all locations.

 
The following are duties of each area of responsibility:
 
Development
  • Serves as Executive Staff Officer of the Board of Directors of Southside Virginia Community College Foundation, Inc.
  • Solicits external resources in support of the College as deemed appropriate by the Southside Virginia Community College Foundation Board of Directors. Major duties would be solicitation of funds from individuals and corporations
  • Fosters good relations internally and externally using strong verbal and written interpersonal skills
  • Plans and implements meetings and agenda for the Board and its committees
  • Plans, coordinates, and manages fund-raising campaigns to include annual, special, and capital programs
  • Conducts prospect research and maintaining a library of resource materials
  • Trains staff and recruits and trains volunteers
  • Prepares case statements
  • Prepares and implements the budget and annual audits
  • Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with the College accounting office, as well as departments across the College and all locations
  • Solicits scholarship support from non-public sources
  • Maintains comprehensive records of contributions received from non-public sources
  • Coordinates special projects as assigned by the President, develop presentations, speeches, etc. Performs other duties as assigned by the President
 
Public Relations
  • Serves as a public relations officer and lead communicator for college communications and announcements with external constituents
  • Ensures appropriate materials are provided to newspapers and other media designed to provide constituents information about the College
  • Ensures development and implementation of a comprehensive Marketing Plan for the College and develops a yearly plan for maintaining appropriate media relations
  • Develops and implements plans to better inform constituents about the College
  • Prepares and has published brochures and other printed materials about the College
  • Leads periodic review of publications across the College
  • Develops and revises College publications which includes, but may not be limited to, the College catalog, annual report, faculty/staff handbook, College directory, and College newspaper
  • Develops and maintains current videos for recruiting
  • Establishes and maintains a current journal of all news publications about the College Coordinates with others to maintain active social media presence
 
Grants
  • Identifies potential sources of federal, state and other such funds
  • Writes grant applications for various state and federal funding grants and assists faculty and administrators in preparing grant applications
  • Assists in the administration of various federal and state funded projects
  • Interprets federal application requirements and procedures to faculty and administrators
  • Coordinates grants fiscal records maintenance and reporting with the business office
  • Prepares proposals, rough drafts and/or background information for use by administrators

The Executive Director of Institutional Advancement is responsible for the IT Security Roles of System Owner and Data Owner as specified in the COV ITRM SEC 501-01 Security Standard.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Work experience in a development / fund raising office
  • Ability to represent the colleges goals and missions as a positive role model
  • Experience working with racially, economically and age-diverse individuals
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and networking skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, college employees and members of the public
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication, written and verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office and/or Google Suite
  • Progressively responsible experience in alumni relations, annual giving or comparable relationship management/fundraising experience
  • Demonstrated success soliciting and closing sizeable gifts
  • High professional and ethical standards for donor centered fundraising
  • Demonstrated record of meeting professional goals and working as a team to achieve department and agency goals in a timely manner
  • Adept at managing tasks, planning events and balancing priorities
  • Self-directed with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of fundraising ethics and practices
  • Discretion in handling confidential information and materials
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working in a higher education environment
