Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Communications Graduate Assistant supports the communication efforts of the Universitys Division of Research, providing both general administrative support and execution of specific communications projects. This appointment is a 12 month, 20 hours per week graduate assistantship. Duties will include the following:

  • Assist with the technical production and layout of the weekly Research Roundup e-newsletter.
  • Draft and edit articles, press releases, video scripts or other content related to the Universitys research and innovation efforts.
  • Provide social media support.
  • Write and edit content for print and electronic publications, as needed.
  • Update web content, as needed.
  • Manage contacts database.
  • Assist with event logistics and media outreach for high-level events.
  • Help deploy content across channels: assist with media monitoring using analytics tools.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to multitask.
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Experience with social media platforms, particularly Twitter.
  • Good grasp of software applications and technical platforms for communications.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Strong preference for concentration in Journalism, Communications, English, Library Science, Humanities, Social Sciences, or related discipline.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with web production or editing, news videography or photography, audio editing or graphics or page design would be a huge plus"
  • Experience with web content management systems, ideally Drupal

Physical Demands

The candidate must be able to occasionally work evenings or during lunch meetings (12pm to 1pm) with adequate notice and be able to accomplish the physical demands of event and office duties which may include lifting 40 lbs.; setting up tables; etc.
