Position Title: Geology Instructor

Classification: PT Faculty

Status (exempt/non-exempt): Exempt

Reports to: Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

Percentage: Part time

Annual/Academic year: Academic Year

Pay is dependent upon individual credentials and experience.

  • These courses will be offered Face to Face or Online for 2024-25 Academic Year. Fall term starts on September 16, 2024.
  • Oregon residency is required for employment

Course detail

G202 Earth Surface Processes (4 credits/66clockhours):

Introduces physical geology which deals with mass wasting, streams, glaciers, deserts, beaches, groundwater, and use of topographic maps. Includes a weekly lab.

TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Student Success: Instruct students using approved course outcome guides and accurate syllabi. Prepare instructional materials as needed. Meet all assigned classes. Apply the colleges values for teaching and learning. Facilitate learning that applies to students academic and career goals. Meet the curricular needs of students at various learning levels. Encourage mutual responsibility for a supportive learning environment. Provide effective teaching strategies in an environment that encourages student and instructor interaction. Actively engage students in the learning process. Encourage creative and critical thinking. Evaluate and grade student progress and systematically assess the program using meaningful indicators to assure currency, improve teaching and learning strategies, and achieve stated student learning outcomes for all students, including underrepresented students and first-generation college students. Maintain accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and scholastic progress. Assess the achievement of student learning outcomes at the course, program, and institutional level.

Professional Responsibilities: Work collaboratively with colleagues and community partners. Interact with students, staff, and administration in a professional manner. Assure effective two-way communication at all levels of responsibility. Engage in a reasonable amount of student contact outside of instruction to respond to questions and to resolve course-related problems. Complete required college trainings.

Additionally, Part-time faculty are invited and encouraged to participate in professional development and other institutional work (such as attending department meetings, engaging in committee work, and advancing shared governance).

Compliance Comply with published College Policies and Procedures. Maintain a safe learning and working environment by following all laws, policies and procedures established by the College and through state and federal oversight (such as OSHA and Title IX). Maintain College safety standards in work areas; ensure that students are trained in good safety practices; and make reasonable efforts to ensure that students follow good safety practices.

Other duties as needed: Use of media aids, the library, and other resources, as applicable.

Requirements:

EDUCATION

Masters degree (or higher) in the subject area OR a Masters degree (or higher) in a related area plus 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in the subject area. Subject Area degrees includes but are not limited to:

  • Geology
  • Geochemistry
  • Geomorphology
  • Geophysics
  • Geosciences
  • Earth Science
  • Earth Systems Science
  • Planetary Science
  • Paleontology

Related Area degrees include but are not limited to:

  • Paleoclimatology
  • Meteorology
  • Oceanography
  • Atmospheric Science
  • Physical Geography
  • Environmental Science
  • Science Teaching

For related area degrees transcripts must be reviewed to document a minimum of 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in the area of earth science.

Demonstrated Competency Qualifications: Bachelors degree in the subject area AND at least 3 years of demonstrable competence gained through any combination of research, teaching, and/or professional work experience, OR Bachelors degree in a related area AND at least 5 years of demonstrable competence gained through any combination of research, teaching, and/or professional work experience.
