University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, Language, Linguistics & Literature Department is seeking applications for the Chinese part-time lecturer position. Other Conditions: For placement into the lecturer pool beginning Fall 2024. Subject to availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. 


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach courses in the assigned subject area.
  2. Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress.
  3. Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes.
  4. Submit self-assessment reports based on student and peer evaluations.
  5. Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.
  6. Maintain one office hour per week for each class taught (20 minutes per credit per week).
  7. Classes may be offered online, evenings and/or weekends.

Minimum Qualifications
Functionally native oral and written fluency in Chinese, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:

  1. Master's in Chinese (language or literature); OR
  2. Master's in Chinese as a Second Language; OR
  3. Master's in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Chinese; OR
  4. Master's in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Chinese literature, Chinese culture, or any combination thereof.

 Desirable Qualifications

  1. Teaching experience related to the course(s) to be taught at the community college level.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work with community college students.
  3. Work experience related to the course(s) to be taught.
  4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively.
  5. Familiarity with competency- and outcomes-based instruction.
  6. Experience mentoring undergraduate research projects in discipline.

The expense of the evaluation shall be borne by the applicant.
