This particular job posting is a "Pool" position. There may or may not be available openings at this time however, when an opening does occur, the hiring manager will draw from the pool of applicants we have on file on an as needed basis. General Statement of Duties:
Tutor students in the Prison Program. Tutors assist students in subject areas of math, English, and business. This position helps students make academic progress, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance. Tutors who are able to assist in multiple subject areas are in most depend. Provides individual and small group tutoring.Assists in training new tutors,Maintains active and current tracking for tutoring services provided to students,Other services as requested by the Director of Academic Support Services and Testing Services.
The Tutors chosen for this position will be required to enter Massachusetts Correctional Institute, which will function as an off campus location for Mount Wachusett Community College. The classroom will follow all standards and expectations that are found on traditional campuses.
For an applicant for employment who meets the minimum entrance requirements, the Commonwealth may review later in the application process, if applicable:
- Criminal Offender Record Information (C.O.R.I.) and;
- Sex Offender Registry Information (S.O.R.I.) and;
- The Central Registry of Child Abuse/Neglect reports maintained in accordance with M.G.L. chapter 119, section 51B.
Responsibilities
- Provides individual and small group tutoring in the Prison Program.
- Able to provide assistance to multiple students concurrently.
- Ability to use appropriate learning techniques/strategies to achieve specific learning outcomes.
- Helps students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
- Use question and answer approach with student(s) to determine nature of issue to be focused on in tutoring session.
- Demonstrate good communication skills, including listening with understanding and patience.
- Demonstrate knowledge of general and subject-specific study strategies and various approaches to learning.
- Provide examples of best practices for completing assignments in subject matter.
- Encourage students to learn by empowering them to find information/answers. Does not assist students with tests or quizzes.
- Assists in training new tutors.
- Sitting in designated areas to help students. Remain in tutoring area during scheduled shift/appointment.
- Able to maintain boundaries of student/tutor relationship in a professional and ethical manner.
- Maintains records of student use by completing departmental forms and paperwork. Ensure that students complete paperwork fully and completely. Assist MWCC students only.
- Attend college Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) trainings each semester, meeting the prescribed attendance guidelines. Continuous professional development is expected of all tutors.
- Review materials regarding tutoring practices.
- Review Academic Support Center handouts and materials for accuracy.
- Remain current with course expectations to best assist students (i.e. current citation formats, computer textbook tools used in classroom, etc.). Deficiencies in skills should be improved on an ongoing basis.
- Understand college offices and departments in order to make referrals for students (i.e. librarians for research assistance, advising office for advising needs, etc.).
- Check MWCC staff email regularly.
- Complete and submit timesheets weekly by the deadline date/time.
- Review materials about tutoring when not assisting a student. Use of personal computers, cell phones, or other devices should be limited to emergency only situations. Use of headphones is prohibited unless approved by the Director or appropriate designee.
- Refer student concerns to Director of Academic Support and Testing Services.
- Maintain student confidentiality according to FERPA regulations.
- Other services as requested by the Director of Academic Support and Testing Services.
WRITING TUTOR
Engage in conversation with students about written work and allow them to take their own notes. Do not write notes or edit on students' papers.
MATH TUTOR
Become familiar math tools used by students.
Stay current with calculator technology.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher required;
- Must have received an A- or better in subject matter wishing to tutor;
- Overall GPA of 3.3 or higher;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Ability to relate to under-prepared and first-generation college students, as well as students with learning disabilities;
- Prior teaching or tutorial experience preferred

Additional Information:
Salary:$32.64-$42.84 per hour based on Interval- Professional Staff Member (Eff 7/2023)
