Basic Function

Under the direction of an administrator or manager, instructs and supervises children enrolled at the Child Development Center; plans and prepares lessons, materials, and special activities for the children; directs the work of assigned staff and volunteer workers assisting in the classroom.

Representative Duties

1. Plans and prepares lessons and materials for classroom activities; plans and participates in fieldtrips and other special activities and/ or events. E
2. Instructs and supervises children in a variety of academic subjects and creative activities such as language, science, math, music, art, and social-emotional, and physical/motor development activities. E
3. Plans and supervises childrens playground activities and rest periods. E
4. Instructs children in appropriate health and safety habits; provides health assistance and training to the children with toileting/diapering, handwashing, and all other self-care tasks; changes diapers, clothes, and shoes, as needed. E
5. Observes and evaluates student progress and development through various modes of documentation; prepares special activities for skills that need further attention. E
6. Maintains a variety of records, files, and filing systems including but not limited to records of attendance and student evaluations. E
7. Serves snacks and meals to children. E
8. Maintains classroom in a clean and orderly condition; cleans classroom after eating, playing, and learning activities. E
9. Participates in the selection, training, and evaluation of teacher aides; provides work direction and guidance to parents, student volunteers, and student teachers. E
10. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the departments day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and corres­pondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment. E
11. Participates in the selection of instructional materials and supplies as needed. E
12. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
· District and college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.
· California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.
· Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
· Current principles and practices of early childhood education and development.
· Practices and methods of instruction, care, and supervision of infant, toddler, and/or preschool-aged children in a learning laboratory classroom setting.
· Concepts of child development and behavior patterns of infant, toddler, and/or preschool-aged children.

· General needs and behavior of pre0school children; applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
· Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
· Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.
· Computer software programs, applications, databases, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of the assignment.
· Best practices and procedures on use of various office equipment.
· Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
· Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
· Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
· Record keeping, filing, file-sharing, and filing systems best practices, methods, and techniques.
· Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

Ability to:

Education and Experience

· Possession of a valid Child Development Teaching Permit or higher issued by the State Department of Education; AND
· One and a half (1 ½) years, per the state requirements of related classroom teaching experience;
· Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

· Child Development Teacher Permit or higher issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
· A valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
· First Aid Certification and Pediatric First Aid Certification.
· CPR and First Aid Certificate from the American Red Cross or other authorized agency.
· Maintain a valid Child Development Teach Permit or higher issued by the State Department of Education.
· Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
· May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Employees are frequently required to walk and stand.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.

Employees in the Child Development Center environment are subject to stooping, pushing, pulling, bending, carrying, and lifting equipment and children up to 50 pounds.

MENTAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.

Employees work in a Child Development Center environment/classroom setting, and the noise level is occasionally moderately loud; work includes indoor and outdoor environment; subject to stooping, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling up to 50 pounds; subject to exposure to communicable diseases. Employees are subject to working with and caring for a variety of indoor and outdoor classroom pets.
