DESCRIPTION

UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions.

The Department of Pathology plays a key role in the University's three missions. It aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UC San Diego.

Under supervision, incumbent will prepare samples and assist in assays for molecular biology and protein biochemistry. Assist with preparation of cell culture. Assist with animal model experiments. Make routine analyses and record results in a notebook. Order and stock equipment and supplies. Incumbent will assist Lab Manager and other lab personnel in routine tasks to keep the research lab in smooth working order. Prepare standardized media reagents, and solutions for research. Clean and sterilize dishware.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and equipment: including preparation of buffers and stock solutions, centrifuges, autoclaves, and proper way to clean and maintain glassware.

  • Ability to keep organized and accurate records and notebooks.

  • Knowledge of sterile technique.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety policies and procedures. Familiarity with biohazards and chemical hazards.

  • Experience in standard cellular and molecular techniques

  • Experience and skill in using computers (PC and Mac) and with programs such as Word, Excel, Photoshop, PowerPoint.

  • Clear and effective written and oral communication skills necessary to interact with others in a research/academic environment for presentation of data and results to others.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Willingness to work with lab animals.

  • Experience with pluripotent stem cells from human and other animal models

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing and able to work with hazardous materials (biological and chemical).

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,340 - $46,771 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.32 - $22.40

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
