GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of the Adult Education Center (AEC) Program, the Academic Advisor assists ESOL program participants at the Hyannis Center in setting and achieving student academic and career goals. This is a part-time role, involving 2 evenings/week up to 7 hours per week.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Meet with evening ESOL students individually and in groups throughout the year to increase retention rates, and to develop, assimilate, and document the FY25 ESOL Advisor Curriculum.
- Monitor attendance rate for each student and follow up with students and staff regarding absences in an ongoing effort to retain students in the DESE Adult Education program and reduce barriers to attending.
- Use SharePoint to evaluate student attendance data on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
- Provide guidance and transition support to assess, advise, and assist student's interests, strengths, skills and life and career goals. Assist students with next steps to help students achieve their college and career readiness goals.
- Employ skills with information technology including entering and manipulating information in a database format, use of Zoom, Moodle, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Use evidence based best practices associated with face to face andragogy (e.g., frequent communication, active learning practices, etc.) as well as developing and using multimedia (audio, video, podcasts, online textbooks, etc.) to enhance face to face student engagement in active and collaborative workforce exploration activities that support student success.
- Participate in student intake, standardized assessment, and orientation of learners in cooperation with teaching staff. After September start date, conduct orientation and goal setting for new students at the beginning of each semester as empty seats are filled and ensuring that students understand program expectations as stated during orientation.
- Work with students and teachers and/or appropriate administrative staff regarding student or classroom issues, except for instructional issues, which Advisor should bring to the Assistant Director.
- Determine student's need for community services and contact the Career Navigator or Assistant Director to make appropriate referrals as needed.
- Maintain a liaison role with CCCC offices/departments, including PACT, food pantry, admissions office, CALM, library, gym, campus safety, and other support/counseling programs that benefit adult learners.
- Attend and participate in both monthly ESOL staff meetings and monthly Advisor team meetings.
- Participate in up to 12 hours/year of approved professional development training for advising, assessment, orientation, and evolving DESE mandates and approved by the Director and Assistant Director.
- Facilitate workshops and guest speakers on education, training, and career issues for students as developed with the Advising team and instructional staff.
- Assist with special projects as needed.
- Participate in trainings for MAPT and TABE testing administration certification, to receive certification and ensure ability to assist with administering MAPT and TABE tests for students.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, student services, adult basic education, ESOL studies or a related discipline.
- Two years of experience working with Adult Learners with demonstrated ability to relate to their needs and interests.
- Demonstrated experience with multicultural students.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with Cape Cod social service agencies.
- Demonstrated experience using information technology including entering and manipulating information in a database format, and proficiency with Zoom, Moodle, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated experience using evidence based best practices associated with adult learning andragogy (e.g., frequent communication, active learning practices) as well as developing and using multimedia (audio, video, podcasts, online textbooks, etc.) to enhance face to face and/or student engagement in active and collaborative workforce exploration activities that support student success.
- Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.

- Commitment to the community college philosophy.
- Experience in and a commitment to working in a global, multicultural academic setting.
- Multi-lingual.

Additional Information:
COMPENSATION: Anticipated starting rate of pay $32.00 per hour for up to 7 hours/week plus 2 hours/month for ESOL staff meetings, 1 hour a month for Advisor Staff meetings and up to 12 hours/year of professional development, pre-approved by Program Director. Approximate period of employment: July 2024-June 2025 during the academic year. Part-time, non-benefited, grant funded MCCC Unit position.
