JOB SUMMARY

This position assumes responsibility for the advising of new and current students, develops/delivers services to help students define and reach educational goals, and provides support as needed in outreach activities to new and current students. Understands the needs of diverse students and is able to create an inclusive and safe environment for all students. It reports to the Senior Director of Advising and Retention.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Advises current and prospective students regarding educational planning and facilitates students progress toward academic goals. Teaches new students how to use technology including student planning, TEAMS, Starfish, Canvas and student email. Supports and teaches students how to register, track progress and plan for transfer.
  • Provides special support to students who are on academic probation including goal setting, and calculating GPA requirements for success.
  • Oversees dual enrollment student retention alerts and manages dual students who have 12 or more credits.
  • Understands and communicates transfer requirements, laws and helps students with transfer planning.
  • Assists in the recruitment and advising of prospective students by participating in high school visitations open houses, and college/career nights; assists in other outreach activities for both current and prospective students.
  • Designs and presents workshops, class presentations, and seminars to facilitate academic planning, registration, and help meet students related counselling/advising needs.
  • Serves as the advising liaison with one or more Area of Study. This includes participating in the planning and promoting of initiatives to encourage student involvement.
  • Uses technology in the support of student success and retention.
  • Understands and communicates career options and transfer planning for Area of study students.
  • Provides support to students with personal issues, such as short-term counseling, referral, and crisis intervention.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Bachelors Degree.
  • At least two years related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist students in personal/educational development and to work with students in a classroom or workshop setting.
  • Be available to work some evenings (10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) and variable hours when necessary. At minimum one evening a week. Part time position, not to exceed 29 hours a week, but availability for 29 hours a week required.
  • Must be positive, cooperative, and supportive.
  • Comfortable with both in person and remote meeting environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Masters degree.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English.
  • Direct community college advising, or counseling experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is normally light work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Periodically, it requires standing for longer periods of time during presentations or fairs. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate
  • Visual Acuity/ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand and convey subject matter
  • Repetitive motion (i.e. keyboarding)
  • Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

College campus, area high schools and related offsite locations. Direct contact with diverse students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common and shared areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office, meeting, and training rooms. Use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations and College policies; and observance of traffic laws if/when driving a College vehicle.
