Student Worker - Cultural Affairs - Event Services Assistant

Job Description

Position Summary

The Cultural Affairs Department is recruiting for one to two students to work part-time to provide support for the smooth functioning of events at the Emerging Technology Complex, Leo J. Welder Center, and Museum of the Coastal Bend by fostering an environment of exceptional customer service.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provide outstanding customer service for clients, guests, and co-workers
  2. Maintain the order and organization of the facilities and work spaces
  3. Inventory and care for event and kitchen inventory, which includes items like food and beverages, linens, chairs, tables, serviceware, and decorations
  4. Assist with event set-ups according to written plans and verbal communications; reset to original state after events have concluded
  5. Manage event duties when customers are onsite. This can include assisting servers, transporting tables and equipment, monitoring and providing beverage services, store sales, greeting and monitoring guests, ticket sales, or providing requested information to event patrons.
  6. Assemble staging, podiums and other structures
  7. Prepare beverages and snack services and wash dishes used when service has concluded
  8. Handle front-desk duties like greeting guests, answering phones, and assisting with clerical duties
  9. Responsible sales and service of beer and wine for Welder Center bar service
  10. Other special duties as assigned by Event Services staff

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in minimum of 6 credit hours in the Fall and Spring semester and 3 credit hours in the summer.  To continue employment during the summer session, you must be enrolled in the interim or summer 1 session.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), including developmental courses.
  • English and basic math proficiency required
  • Must be able to follow instructions and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to multi-task, have strong reasoning and problem solving skills, and be detail oriented
  • Must be able to maintain poise in fast-paced, high-stress situations
  • Must have strong customer service skills
  • Must be willing to complete online training for Food Handler, TABC Seller-Server, and Trained Crowd Management Certifications

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle controls, key pads, etc. Will be required to sit and reach with hands and arms as well as, sit, stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while loading office supplies and paper. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, some color vision, and the ability to adjust focus from documents to computer screen. Hearing of light to moderate sound is required by this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
