Mental Health Counselor
Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Counseling, Counselors provide mental health services to enrolled students. Primary responsibilities are providing individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, performing initial evaluations, and providing crisis interventions. Counseling staff provide training to students, faculty, and staff on a variety of relevant topics related to the interplay between emotional wellbeing and academic performance. Additional responsibilities include providing consultation services to staff, faculty, administrators, and families; designing and delivering mental health programming and outreach services to the college community; and other duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct psychosocial assessments of students referred by staff, faculty and self.
- Provide individual and group counseling and psychotherapy services that are responsive to a diverse population of students.
- Provide prevention and outreach around the issues of neurodiversity and mental health.
- Provide guidance and support to staff and faculty in need of assistance and support while responding to emergencies and crisis interventions with students.
- Develop a referral network and refer, where appropriate, students to professionals outside the College, including arrangements for emergency in-patient care.
- Participate in the development of policies and operating procedures related to Counseling Services.
- Participate in Family Orientation, consult with parents as appropriate and participate in Family Weekend as necessary.
- Participate in regular staff and faculty meetings.
- Attend residential life meetings and other meetings as appropriate for the coordination of care for individual students and as supportive of the healthy growth and development of students in general.
- Provide service in accordance with legal and ethical mandates.
- Provide thorough and accurate documentation.
- Provide consultation services to student groups, and to faculty and staff, which address the psychological and emotional wellbeing of students and their developmental needs.
- Participate in student orientations, workshops, and programs that provide information to individuals and groups related to mental health and developmental concerns.
- Remain current with developments in counseling and mental health, which specifically relate to college students, neurodivergence, and college community life.
- Develop and maintain computer skills that effectively access the computer as a general office tool. Be able and willing to pivot to telehealth platforms as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
Master's degree in counseling, clinical or counseling psychology, or social work; experience providing individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; outreach; programming; mental health consultation; crisis intervention; and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Requires a minimum of 3 years post graduate experience and a professional license acquired by supervised counseling experience and the passing of a state/national level examination.
The candidate ideally will have some background related to education and or demonstrates some prior experience working with individuals who have diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and Dyslexia.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, documentation, and organizational skills. The ability to responsibly handle confidential/sensitive information. Technological competency for the use of electronic record keeping and documentation.
Demonstrated awareness and ability to provide culturally competent mental health services.
