Dental Assistant Instructor (Adjunct Faculty Pool)
Job Description
General Statement of Responsibilities
Responsible for instructing assigned Dental Assistant courses. Potential courses include: Dental Assistant I and II , Dental Assistant Labs. Provides direct supervision and assessment of progress of dental assisting students in a classroom or laboratory classroom setting, each with an online component. Participate in program faculty meetings. Maintain college standards regarding professionalism, record keeping and instruction within the Dental department faculty team of the Dental programs.

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions
- Instructs students in a classroom, lab, learning center, or other setting as appropriate; teaching a variety of didactic, laboratory & clinical dental assisting and/or related courses.
- Advises students on matters of program goals and course requirements, scheduling office hours as required.
- Monitor patient care to ensure that patients receive safe and appropriate care.
- Assist with orientation, calibration and training of part-time clinical instructors.
- Assess the completeness and accuracy of student, patient and clinic records.
- Maintain confidentiality of information related to students, patients, faculty and staff.
- Monitor student, patient and instructor compliance with clinical policies and procedures.
- Serve as a role model for the dental assisting profession.
- Prepares, distributes and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
- Develops, communicates, and utilizes a student assessment process and instruments which are related to the stated objectives of the course and program.
- Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
- Participates in curriculum planning and development as needed; participates in comprehensive program reviews, to include regular and systemic curriculum and program assessment to be used for continuous program and curricular improvement; participates in assessment of student learning at the course, program, and institutional levels.
- Serves as a member of college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities as assigned.
- Participates in the development of the quarterly class schedule and the annual departmental budget; initiates purchase requisitions, travel requests, and work orders as needed.
- Engages in regular professional growth activity based on the objectives established in an approved professional manner.
- Represents the program and the college to the community, business, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
- Responsible for departmental equipment: participates in periodic inventory and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate to the department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Screening Criteria
Education:
- Bachelors degree earned within three years of the date of initial hire (military with a rank of staff sergeant, E5, or non-commissioned officer are exempt);
- Current CPR/First AID card, HIPPA and OSHA standards training required (or ability to obtain); and
- Background in and current knowledge of dental assisting and educational theory and methodology.
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
Licenses and Certificates:
Required Qualifications:
- Holds a current certification for Dental Assisting;
- OR Credentials for expanded dental assisting functions, including dental radiography, coronal polishing, placement of pit and fissure sealants;
- Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) credential: Certified Dental Assistant; and
- Current certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
Preferred Qualification: RDH certification.
For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Drivers License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon drivers license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).
Experience:
- Current teaching experience in dental assisting education is preferred.
- Recent experience in the application of four-handed dentistry principles
- Experience working with patients who have limited access to dental care.
- Experience with computer-based dental practice management systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Office computer software including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
Knowledge of:
- Computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, networks, the internet, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations;
- Curriculum development;
- Educational theory and teaching methods (e.g., background in current education theory and practice, concepts relative to the specific subjects they are teaching and clinical practice experiences, and a variety of pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, discussion, and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles)
- Knowledge of current concepts in dental assisting and dental assisting education.
- Current knowledge of dental infection control procedures, radiation safety, emergency management, HIPAA and FERPA.
- The contemporary community colleges mission, its role in higher education, and its diverse student population;
- The role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act;
Ability to: Be deemed "fit" by Senior and Persons with Disability (SPD) Division following required Criminal History check.
Safely demonstrate, model, and instruct students using proper procedures and protocol. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with respect to diverse students, staff, agencies and community members; ability and willingness to work with non-traditional adult learners as well as teens; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties, including the use of new technologies such as online instruction; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth.
Pass a criminal background check.
Licenses: If required to drive on behalf of the college, must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 60%), which is spent in a lab/clinical setting, utilizing equipment; and sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and other standard office equipment. On feet 90% of time. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a laboratory/ hospital environment, and is potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab/hospital environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises. Lighting is adequate.
