Academic Counselor - TRIO Student Support Services Program
Job Description

- Provides academic, career, retention and financial literacy counseling to a cohort of TRIO SSS students in the program.
- Develops and provides Individual Student Academic plans, advising, and monitors students progress, utilizing grades, conferences, instructor feedback and other appropriate information for new and continuing TRIO SSS students.
- Provides workshops for TRIO SSS students on financial aid, financial literacy, transfer to a four-year college, self-management and study strategies.
- Works collaboratively with the Office for Students with Disabilities and Deaf Services (OSD/DS) to review appropriate documentation and develop accommodation plans for TRIO SSS students with disabilities.
- Assists with the projects and activities of the TRIO SSS Ambassadors program.
- Consults with faculty, Financial Aid Office, the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), and TRIO SSS staff, on behalf of program students.
- Plans and facilitates TRIO SSS Program Day, monthly workshops, transfer trips, cultural and other activities for program participants.

Plans and provides outreach initiatives to students through class presentations, college events, collaborations with campus success programs and other initiatives as needed. Some initiatives might include night and/or weekend commitments.
- Establishes and maintains confidential records and contributes to program record keeping system.
- Participates in all other operational aspects of the project, including program planning and development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED:
- Masters Degree in Education, Human Services, Sociology, Psychology or closely related field;
- Three (3) years experience in TRIO or similar programs that serve underrepresented groups, preferably low-income, disabled, and/or first-generation students OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;
- Demonstrated experience working with college students;
- Experience with academic planning and advising;
- Experience with peer mentoring and tutoring programs;
- Ability to work independently and/or as a team member;
- Strong computer skills;
- Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills;
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student body.
PREFERRED:
- Experience in higher education;
- Experience with Student Administration software (i.e. Banner);
- Bilingual (English/Spanish); Knowledge of American Disabilities Act;
- Presentation skills;
- Experience with group design and facilitation;
- Background in assessment, career development, and financial literacy counseling.
MCCC/MTA Unit position - 11 month position
Salary: Grade 5; Salary Range: $60,532.20 - $65,212.80/year (Salary based on 11 months); Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits.
Funding Source: Grant-funded through August 31, 2025. Continuation after August 31, 2025 is contingent upon funding.
