Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

Purpose of Position:
A registered professional nurse who assumes responsibility for planning, teaching, and evaluating students in the clinical area. The instructor shares in the total responsibility of providing quality instruction for the students. The adjunct faculty will become familiar with the philosophy, objectives and policies of the nursing program and the Nursing Student Handbook. The adjunct will become familiar with the college-wide adjunct faculty handbook, the college catalog, and college policies. Attend selected meetings as designated by the dean/college/nursing director. Shall maintain professional competence and provide evidence of completion to the nursing office through activities such as active practice, continuing education programs, conferences, workshops, seminars academic courses, research projects and professional writing. Participate in academic advising, and counseling to assigned group of students. Confer with the nursing program director regarding clinical rotation plans, assigned clinical agencies, and assigned group of students. Plan orientation day at assigned clinical facility for designated time on the assigned unit and for other clinical agency clinical adjunct onboarding requirements. This will be coordinated through full-time nursing faculty or the nursing program director. Attend student orientation for clinical site as needed. Select patient assignments and plan learning experiences on the clinical unit according to classroom instruction, course objectives, and student needs. Review clinical objectives with students, conduct pre/post conferences for each clinical day, Assist students in the integration and reinforcement of learning by relating knowledge and skills of nursing and other disciplines to the learning experiences of the clinical setting. Provide supervision and guidance for the student using components of the nursing process with the assigned patient in the clinical setting. Serve as a role model and resources person to student clinical groups. Be accessible to students at all times in clinical situations. Assist faculty to develop, implement, and evaluate the philosophy and objectives of the nursing education program. Assist in the designing, implementing, teaching, evaluating and revising clinical curriculum. Assist in developing and evaluating student admissions, progression, retention and graduation policies within the P&HCC framework. Provide opportunities for student and graduate evaluation of curriculum and teaching and program effectiveness by connecting students to departmental surveys. Document actions taken in faculty and committee meetings as needed. Review, correct, comment on care plans/concept maps/other designated written clinical paperwork required for clinical experiences and return to students or lead faculty the following week. Evaluate and record student progress and confer at the end of each rotation and end of semester in terms of strengths, and areas where improvement is needed; complete the written evaluation of student clinical performance on designated form. Maintain an environment conducive to learning. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff and personnel of clinical agencies. Maintain accurate records of attendance for clinical students and record and report to full-time faculty. Report to the lead/core full-time faculty any student problems or concerns that may occur in the clinical setting; record date and time of occurrence, document the events/concerns/situation, conferring with nursing program director as needed. Note occurrence on clinical evaluation form for involved student, and ensure student dates and signs name. Assist with instruction in skills laboratory as needed, and additional duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current VA license or multistate licensure to practice nursing in Virginia as a registered nurse without any disciplinary action that currently restricts practice.
  • Bachelor Degree in the Field of Nursing ; if current staffing would alter the percentage of MSN prepared faculty to less than 50% , a MSN is required.
  • Must have two years of direct client care experience as a registered nurse prior to employment by the program.
  • Must participate in annual professional development according to Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations.
  • AHA BLS CPR certification
  • Must be able to follow BON Regulations for Nursing Education Programs 18VAC90-27-10 et seq.
  • Use a computer and other technologies for instruction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Walk, stand, lift as needed.
  • Exposure to potential communicable diseases.
  • Work up to 12 hour shifts if needed.
  • Provide immunization history.
  • Pass a criminal background check and drug screen as required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous teaching experience (not required).
