About Us
Kings History department is an internationally-recognised centre for the study of the history of the world. Our undergraduate curriculum introduces students to world history from the early medieval period to the present; it then offers students pathways to study every continent through their second and third years. Our MA provision is similarly broad, developing students expertise in medieval, early modern and modern world history. We are an intellectual home for scholars of every region of the world, who use approaches which range from local micro-histories to large-scale quantitative analysis. We particularly value conversation between scholars of different periods and places, with different approaches.
About The Role
The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer specialising in the History of Science and the Environment, 1800-2000, for one year beginning January 2025. This is to cover a colleague who has been awarded a major research grant. We are looking to recruit a colleague with expertise in any aspect of the field able to teach a range of courses in the history of science and environmental history, and their methods.
You will conduct and publish high quality research in the subject. You will teach a range of undergraduate and, potentially, MA modules in the history of modern science and environmental history.
You will contribute to survey modules, taking seminars of core skills modules and possibly MA teaching. You will assume pastoral and administrative responsibilities, and participate actively in the life and culture of the department. You will participate in and help lead collaborative research activities at Kings, especially in the history department and Environmental Humanities Network. A strong research record, excellent teaching ability, outstanding interpersonal skills and a collaborative ethos are essential for the role.

This is a full time and you will be offered a a fixed term contract until 31 December 2025.
About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- PhD in a relevant field completed or near completion
- Excellent research in the modern (1800-2000) history of science and/or environmental history
- Ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to the modern (1800-2000) history of science and environmental history
- Ability to engage students, support their learning and support their wellbeing through their degree
- Demonstrable administrative skills or ability
- Evidence of a collaborative ethos, capacity for team-working and enthusiasm for engaging with other colleagues
- Experience of teaching and supporting students at undergraduate level
- Excellent research record relative to career stage
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching and supporting students at postgraduate level
