Position Summary

The President & CEO will lead the Guttmacher Institute in fulfilling its mission to advance SRHR through rigorous research, strategic communications, and impactful advocacy. This individual will be responsible for Guttmachers strategic direction and ensuring that it has the resources and visibility to advance its mission. The President & CEO will work closely with the Board of Directors, senior leadership team, and external stakeholders to drive the Institute's vision and ensure its financial sustainability and organizational effectiveness. This is an extraordinary opportunity to help advance sexual and reproductive rights on a global basis during a critical moment in history.

 

Responsibilities

The President & CEOs key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Strategic Vision and Leadership:

  • Work closely with the Board and staff to create and implement a clear, compelling vision for advancing the Institutes work and impact into the future and a strategic plan that provides a road map for achieving that vision, including measurable goals and milestones.
  • Increase recognition of the Guttmacher Institute as the preeminent research and policy organization dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights in the United States and globally.
  • Oversee the development and dissemination of high-quality research and analysis on SRHR issues. Ensure that the Institutes research informs and influences policy and practice at national and international levels by developing and implementing high impact advocacy strategies.

 

External Affairs, Strategic Partnership Building and Fundraising:

  • Provide oversight and strategic direction for Guttmachers development and fundraising efforts, including grant applications, donor relations, and partnership development.
  • Develop and implement a sound strategy for diversifying and expanding the organizations funding base and set aggressive development goals to increase funding.
  • Advocate and champion Guttmacher Institute specifically and SRHR issues generally, effectively representing Guttmacher to a range of audiences. Build strategic alliances with stakeholders across sectors to achieve desired policy and research goals.

 

Board Relations:

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance and strategic guidance, fostering a strong, transparent, and collaborative working relationship while supporting Board development and engagement efforts.
  • Provide the Board with timely updates on organizational performance, opportunities, and challenges. Ensure transparency around all key governance issues, including strategic planning, financial oversight, and board recruitment and development. Support Board development and recruitment efforts, including identifying and cultivating potential board members and ongoing development opportunities.

 

Organizational Leadership and Management:

  • Recruit, retain, and develop a high-performing team, ensuring high levels of engagement and development across all levels.
  • Provide effective leadership to the senior management team, ensuring each leader has the support and resources needed to achieve ambitious goals and ensure maximum performance across all teams and departments.
  • Promote and continually strengthen a culture of strong integrity, high performance, meaningful collaboration, and continuous improvement that values learning and commitment to quality.
  • Champion racial and gender equity within the Institute and its work.
  • Effectively support and uplift the Guttmacher workforce by providing vocal and supportive leadership for ongoing organizational change processes.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Institute, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure the financial health and long-term financial sustainability of the Institute through effective budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation.

 

Qualifications and skills

The next leader of the Guttmacher Institute will be a creative and strategic leader with the vision and commitment required to navigate the SRHR landscape today and into the future. They will be an effective spokesperson and a good listener who can build trust and lead with an emphasis on transparency, inclusion, and collaboration in a newly established organized workforce. Recognizing that the President & CEO may come from a range of backgrounds and may offer alternative structures including a co-leadership model, strong candidates will offer some or all of the following:

  • Deep knowledge of SRHR issues and a commitment to advancing reproductive rights globally.
  • A demonstrated passion for social, racial, and reproductive justice.
  • The background, knowledge, and experience required to ensure that the Institutes highly regarded research continues to be disseminated widely and impacts policy.
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising and resource development from a variety of sources, a desire and ability to create a clear strategy for raising funds, and active engagement in development efforts.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and leading teams and organizations through long-range strategic planning efforts that have had measurable impact.
  • Ability to establish and grow productive partnerships and coalitions that advance Guttmachers mission and the SRHR field.
  • Proven leadership, management, and financial acumen within an organization of similar scale and complexity as the Guttmacher Institute.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to speak effectively, listen, and inspire passion and commitment in a range of internal and external constituents.
  • Demonstrated experience building inclusive, equitable teams and cultures that operationalize core values and enable and enhance engagement and accountability.
  • Strong change management skills, with an approach to organizational change that is strategic and culturally aware.
  • A collaborative leadership style and an aptitude for building consensus and informing, engaging, and empowering employees across the entire organization.
  • Experience working with and developing a diverse Board of Directors, with a commitment to working in close partnership with the Board, ensuring members are connected to the organization, have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, and are up to date and informed on relevant internal and external issues. Strong cultural awareness, particularly with international partners.

 

In addition to the above, strong candidates will offer:

  • Experience and willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
  • Advanced degree in public health, social sciences, public policy, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit or research organization.

 

Salary and benefits

Salary for the role is currently anticipated to range from $370,000 - $390,000, commensurate with experience. The Guttmacher Institute practices a hybrid work schedule, requiring in-office attendance 8 days per month at our NYC location. We offer excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; vacation, personal, and sick time; paid parental leave; tuition reimbursement; commuting subsidy; and a 401(k) plan with employer match. The range for this position is specific to New York and DC, but base pay may vary depending on a wide range of factors, including experience, skill sets, and training.
