Essential Job Duties

The Facilities Maintenance Technician is an essential part of the Building Maintenance and Operations (BM&O) team at NC State, assigned to one of the zone maintenance shops located on the main campus, Centennial Campus, or CBC (Veterinary School) campus. Technicians in these shops perform routine maintenance, operations, and repairs on campus facilities, including HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. This role is suited for semi-skilled workers specializing in a particular trade and includes participation in the departments entry-level training program. Key responsibilities and duties include, but not limited to:
  • Repair leaks, check boiler levels, and assist with pipe installations
  • Perform preventive maintenance and basic electrical/plumbing repairs
  • Follow safety protocols, including isolating and locking out systems during maintenance tasks
  • Take readings on boilers and chillers, report discrepancies, and maintain accurate equipment records
  • Monitor chemical levels to ensure the proper operation of systems
  • Promote campus safety by maintaining equipment in optimal working order and adhering to established safety practices

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in the maintenance or building system trades
  • Some experience in HVAC, steam, plumbing, and electrical trades

Required License or Certification

  • Valid North Carolina drivers license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
