Basic Function
Representative Duties
Knowledge and Abilities
- District policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.
- District policies and procedures, terminology, and codes used in processing and recording accounting activities related to financial transactions.
- Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Budget needs of all departments within the District/college.
- Principles, practices, procedures, and theories of accounting.
- Governmental Accounting Standard Board (GASB).
- Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Operation of Districts accounting systems and interpreting input and output of data.
- Fundamental accounting and internal control practices and procedures.
- Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- California Education Code and Title V related to the area of assignment.
- Methods, practices, and terminology used in governmental accounting and financial reporting.
- Bookkeeping, and financial record keeping.
- Budget needs of all departments within the college.
- Modern and complex principles and procedures of financial record keeping and budgeting.
- Best practices and procedures on use of various office equipment
- Accounting and auditing principles, practices, and procedures.
- Financial, statistical, and fiscal record-keeping principles.
- Mathematical principles.
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
- Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

- Analyze accounting activity transactions and account balances.
- Maintain and audit fiscal records and accounts in a community college district.
- Perform technical and complex accounting work in the preparation, maintenance, and review of District financial records, accounts, and reports.
- Understand and ensure compliance with District accounting policies and procedures.
- Accurately tabulate, record, and balance assigned transactions.
- Effectively utilize computer equipment and software programs, applications, and databases in the performance of duties.
- Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
- Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Maintain and update a variety of financial records and files related to budget control, accounts payable and receivable transactions.
- Prepare a variety of financial and statistical reports.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues and situations.
- Operate various office machines (including personal computers and copiers) and the use of software, such as, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and District Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.
Education and Experience
- Associate degree with coursework in accounting or related discipline; AND
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting;
- Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.
Foreign Degrees
Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.
License Certificates/Credentials
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
- May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline.
- Experience in a higher education environment.

Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
