The NC State Veterinary Hospital is an integrated health care center for companion, equine and farm animals. We exist to further the teaching mission of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and to provide state-of-the-art patient care. More than 30,000 patients are diagnosed and treated annually by the Veterinary Hospital. Established in 1983, the Veterinary Hospital is one of the highest rated regional academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The NC State Equine hospital provides state of the art, continuous care for elective, urgent (same day), and emergent cases, as well outpatients, through the hospital-based Equine Medicine, Equine Soft Tissue Surgery, Equine Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and Equine Emergency services.
The Equine Emergency service is overseen by specialists with board certification in Equine Surgery and Equine Critical Care. The ambulatory service is a new section within the Emergency Service that will see on-farm primary emergency cases from local subscribing practices on weekdays from 5 pm to 8 am Monday through Thursday, and on the weekends from 5pm Friday through 8 am Monday. Local practices are able to join this service, which will provide emergency services for the practice, through a monthly subscription fee. The service will employ two clinicians, who will split the on call hours. Emergency case load for this new service is projected to be 552 cases annually. Ambulatory Emergency clinicians will be supported by one after hours technician. The Ambulatory Emergency clinicians will have case consultation support from hospital criticalists as needed. The clinicians will be expected to utilize open, frequent communication via in-person, phone, and email interactions to develop strong collaborations with referring veterinarians of the subscribing practices. The Ambulatory Emergency Clinicians will train students and house officers while seeing emergency cases in the field.
Essential Job Duties
The candidate will have primary case responsibility for ambulatory primary emergency cases, supported by consultation and referral options as needed for more intense or severe emergency cases. The successful candidate will provide emergency expertise, as well as effective and collegial communication and collaboration with internal services. They will be responsible for student and house officer training. They will be responsible for collaborating and communicating with referring veterinarians of the subscribing practices, including university and community outreach.
- Clinical duties: The position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and management of primary equine emergency cases. The person in this role will be responsible for evaluating and treating primary emergency cases, with some flexibility in scheduling based on clinician availability.
- Teaching: The person in this position would be expected to teach students and house officers emergency triage, diagnosis, and treatment while evaluating and treating primary emergency cases. This person would attend and contribute to student and house officer rounds, and participate in regular emergency service meetings. The person in this position would also work closely with curriculum leaders as a content expert for the equine handling, safety, and general skills portion of the curriculum.
- University/Community Outreach: The clinicians would be responsible for scheduling bi-annual meetings and informal practice visits with the subscribing practitioners, to foster strong relationships within the program.

Minimum Education and Experience
- DVM or equivalent degree.
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty license) in North Carolina also required.

- Prior relevant equine emergency experience
Preferred Qualifications
- An equine internship and/or 1-3 years of experience with equine ambulatory practice, including emergency case experience is preferred.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty license) in the State of NC.
- A valid NC drivers license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained throughout employment.
