JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: President & Chief Professional Officer

Classification: Exempt

Principal Location: Hilo, Hawaii

Summary:

The President & Chief Professional officer (CPO) is the principal resource professional to the HIUW Board of Directors and the community. The CPO provides executive level leadership through representation and advocacy within the community and by raising awareness, building relationships, and raising funds to advance the mission of Hawaii Island United Way. The CPO plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the staff, programs, and activities of HIUW to assure that objectives are attained, and plans fulfilled. Implements Board decisions; provides input to all committees; advises Board on all matters that may affect its planning, prioritizing, and policy-making efforts. Responsible for budget development and implementation; ensures community building efforts are successful; builds relationships based on trust with organizational and community stakeholders; provides guidance and support for all Campaign activities; and supports all Board and committee efforts.

Accountability: The President & CPO reports to the HIUW Board of Directors through its Chair.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the overall planning, coordination and efforts of staff and volunteers as they relate to and support the mission of HIUW, "Uniting people, organizations and resources to build a healthy community".
  • Assists volunteer leadership in identifying and solving community problems; assists with developing long-range strategic plans to meet community health and welfare needs.
  • Ensures guidelines set forth in the "Strategic Directions for the Hawaii Island United Way, Inc." are pursued, expand upon funding streams, and continue to elevate HIUWs image and brand throughout Hawai‘i island.
  • Assists with the planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of island-wide fundraising programs within the framework of a volunteer campaign structure and in accordance with United Way Worldwide principles. This includes but is not limited to the Pacesetter and General campaign, Combined Federal Campaign, grants, all special events sponsored by HIUW and events run on behalf of HIUW, etc.
  • Ensures the long-term and near-term financial viability of HIUW by driving effective fundraising efforts and engaging the next generation of donors.
  • Ensures that HIUW remains compliant with United Way Worldwide Policies & Guidelines and maintains a Member in good standing.
  • Represents the County of Hawaii as Chair of the FEMA Emergency Food and Shelter Program, a current responsibility of United Way Worldwide.
  • Allocates HIUW resources in accordance with priority needs, recognizing contractual relationships with partner or affiliate agencies and emphasizing consideration of efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Enhances public understanding of human services needs and the role HIUW plays. Develops cooperative relationships with government and community groups to fund and implement effective human service systems.
  • Provides leadership for community building initiatives and ensures program outcomes reflect program funded results and provides consultation to and serves as liaison between the partner agencies and the Board.
  • Manages financial resources including budgeting, collections, and disbursements; assures proper accounting for all funds, property, official records, and all other HIUW assets.
  • Assures HIUW remains transparent; performs a yearly audit; 990; incorporates "Best Practices" and meets the highest level of "Standards of Excellence" set forth by United Way Worldwide.
  • Maintains all Corporate records to include Board and Committee agendas and minutes of meetings that specifically result in an "action" with the assistance of the Office Coordinator.
  • Provides an effective safety environment and develops safety awareness to ensure an accident-free workplace.
  • Serves as a resource person to the Board of Directors and committees.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises, guides, and direct the day-to-day execution of activities and duties of HlUW staff (both union and non-union), managers, contractors and volunteers to ensure compliance with general policies established by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for HR issues such as employee job performance reviews, EEO issues, etc.
  • Direct, train, and consult staff on issues, risks, analysis, assessments, and documentation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Employee Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with adequate insurance.
  • Ability to qualify for fidelity bonding.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, business administration, communications, or a related field preferred or the equivalent in work experience.

Work Experience

  • Three (3) years demonstrated supervisory experience in a social service/non-profit organization or related field.
  • Prior involvement as a volunteer in community activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following:
  • Strong organizational leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Compiling and analyzing data.
  • Some fundraising experience.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and computer systems

Work Conditions:

  • Day time hours 7:45am – 4:30pm however, may require late hours and weekends to complete assignments and projects or special events.
  • Required to meet multiple priorities and project due dates.
  • Indoor work - exposed to indoor conditions, dust, noise, dirt, heat, various lighting conditions, etc and outdoor work – exposed to weather conditions, etc.

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Work may be performed at various locations under varying conditions.
  • May require sitting and/or standing for long periods of time.
  • May lift boxes and other materials up to 30 pounds.
  • May be required to drive long distances in performance of duties.
  • Requires managing multiple functions and tasks.
  • Requires a high degree of emotional intelligence.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in nonprofit organization management.
  • One (1) year of executive level leadership experience.
  • Some grant writing experience.

HIRING RANGE:

The hiring range for President & Chief Professional Officer position is $80,000.00 to $105,000. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
