Basic Function

Under the direction of an administrator or manager, plans, conceptualize, develops and conducts training programs in computer software and advanced technology for District personnel; develops technology training course materials; performs one-on-one software and hardware training and problem-solving; assesses technology training needs in departments and develops training plans to implement the training needs and to perform other work as required.

Representative Duties

  1. Plans, conceptualizes, develops, and conducts advanced technology related staff development training workshops; receives input from varied sources. E
  2. Assesses institutional training needs and directions and conducts workshops and/or one-on-one training programs on various software packages for college faculty and staff; establishes an expertise network of colleagues familiar with specific software and other advanced technology. E
  3. Develops and maintains current technology course training materials; evaluates and/or develops training materials such as user guides, handbooks, handouts, and other documentation on the use of various software applications and other forms of advanced technology. E
  4. Attends various conferences, seminars, and/or meetings related to the use and development of advanced technology and training techniques. E
  5. Assists in the development of the Districts Professional Development Plan with special attention to advanced technology training needs and directions. E
  6. Assists the Professional Development Office and Technology and Information Services staff with technology evaluation, set-up, and training as needed. E
  7. May provide technical assistance to college faculty and staff in identifying, evaluating, installing, and implementing micro-computing software or applications.
  8. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the departments day-to-day activities and/or operations including but not limited to greets and directs visitors, answers, responds to callers, and directs incoming phone calls; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion or requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance standard office equipment. E
  9. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • District policies and procedures related to the area of assignment.
  • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.

  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • A variety of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, e-mail, and relational database applications.

Ability to:
  • Independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
  • Diagnose institutional situations in which the application of advanced technology might be applicable and prescribe and perform appropriate training.
  • Conceptualize and execute training workshops on spreadsheets, word processing and micro-computer databases.
  • Work independently and communicate with non-technical users and other personnel in a positive, professional manner.
  • Assist various faculty and staff in understanding the operation of personal computers and other advanced technology.
  • Gather information regarding institutional needs within work units and assess and prescribe potential solutions to workplace demands utilizing computers and/or other advanced technology.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals and prepare clear, concise documentation.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Operate various office machines (including personal computers and copiers) and the use of software, such as, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and District Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with district faculty, staff, and/or students as well as appropriate vendors.
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in computing science, information technology, or related field; AND
  • Two (2) years of experience as a technology trainer or similar.
  • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.

Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

MENTAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.
