Job Description

Nebraska Wesleyan University seeks applications for Financial Aid Counselor. The successful candidate for this position will assist the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management through the awarding process and the student loan program while counseling current and prospective students and their parents with regard to financial aid programs. Another significant role for the successful incumbent will be to oversee Student Employment on campus while partnering with the Human Resources and Career Center. The candidate will administer the Federal Student Work study program by tracking eligibility, monitoring budgets, assigning campus employment, collecting required paperwork and setting up community partnerships for student employees. There may be other student service support duties that overlap with the Admissions and Enrollment team working with first-year and/or transfer students.

This full-time, 12-month, benefit eligible position, which includes a comprehensive benefit package including health, vision and dental insurance benefits, retirement benefits, a generous holiday schedule, paid vacation and sick leave, and tuition remission benefits for the employee's dependents among other benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and process financial aid for students in our graduate programs.
  • Provide individualized financial aid counseling and advising prospective and current students, helping them understand their financial aid options, eligibility criteria, and application processes.
  • Assist the Director of Scholarships and Financial Aid in the management of the Campus Employment program for students and administer the Federal Work Student program, including verifying student eligibility to work and processing of all employment paperwork.
  • Assist students and families in completing financial aid forms, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and institutional aid applications.
  • Interpret and communicate financial aid policies, procedures, and regulations to students, parents, and university staff members.
  • Evaluate student financial aid applications, determine eligibility for several types of aid, and package awards in accordance with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.
  • Conduct verification reviews of financial aid applications, collect required documentation, and resolve discrepancies to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with the financial aid team, enrollment services staff, and academic departments to facilitate timely and accurate award processing.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations governing financial aid programs, including Title IV requirements, consumer information disclosures, and audit standards.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, reviews, and assessments of financial aid operations, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a bachelor's degree, preferably in Business Administration or related field.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in financial aid, banking, finance, accounting or other related fiscal experience.
  • Must be computer literate regarding Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, with the ability to learn internal software packages, File Transfer Programs, and loan processing software.
  • Must have outstanding organizational skills, be detailed and accurate in processing financial aid information, and have excellent math aptitude.
  • Must possess a high level of initiative, self-motivation and be able to work with discretion regarding sensitive information.
  • Possess good interpersonal communication skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to comprehend and apply the ever-changing federal laws pertaining to financial aid, including proper processing of information and meeting all federal deadlines.
  • Must be sensitive to confidentiality of students' and parents' financial records.
  • Must be able to work well with students, faculty, staff and administration while anticipating and understanding their needs.
  • Demonstrate good spelling and proofreading skills, be adaptable, flexible, and work with multiple interruptions.
  • Must be able to train and supervise student workers and delegate work projects.
