Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nations Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range.

The CSM Velocity Center Makerspace is a hub of innovation, creativity, and learning in the Southern Maryland region. Our mission is to provide access to advanced tools, foster innovation, and promote STEM/STEAM education for community members of all ages. 

The individual in this position is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the makerspace while helping to support innovative programming and community engagement. The individual will maintain and support equipment, assist makerspace members, and develop educational and entrepreneurial programs. The ideal candidate is technically skilled, creative, and passionate about STEAM education and community building.

Reports to: Executive Director, Velocity Center

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.  The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks:  Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Makerspace Operations (30%)

  • Oversee daily operations, including opening/closing, equipment maintenance, and inventory management.
  • Ensure safe and efficient usage of equipment such as laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC routers, and more.
  • Develop and enforce safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and equipment manuals.
  • Research evaluate and recommend purchases of appropriate equipment and software.
Program Development (30%)
  • Design, schedule, and deliver workshops, courses, and events for youth and adults including, but not limited to making, tinkering, innovation, problem-based learning.
  • Partner with community organizations to develop innovation programs.
  • Regularly assesses course needs through student/community assessment, local industry demand, and input from other areas of the college.
  • Create promotional content for makerspace programs and assist with marketing efforts.
Administrative Duties (15%)
  • Assist the Executive Director with recruitment, budgeting, data management, and program evaluation.
  • Maintain accurate records of makerspace usage, program attendance, and equipment maintenance.
Supervision and Leadership (10%)
  • Assist with training, and supervise part-time instructors, student assistants, and temporary staff.
  • Schedule staff and ensure adequate coverage for makerspace operations, programs, and events.
Member Support (10%)
  • Provide hands-on training and troubleshooting for makerspace members.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals of all skill levels.
Community Engagement (5%)
  • Represent the makerspace at community events and forums.

Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training

  • Associates degree in a relevant field (e.g. engineering, education, or business)
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience. 
  • Hands-on experience with makerspace equipment and technology, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC equipment and related software.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development and delivery.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  •  Bachelors degree preferred.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environment.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Office suite and other office equipment
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety related information and instructions in equipment use/maintenance.
  • Ability to receive, process, and provide visual and verbal information. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to operate equipment and maneuver in makerspace lab.
  • Lifting up to 20 lbs. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment.
