Part-Time, Hourly Career Technical Education/Adult Education Counselor

DESCRIPTION

Please Note:  Napa Valley College accepts applications for part-time, hourly faculty pools on a continuous basis.  This allows the division to contact qualified applicants immediately, if a need arises without having to wait for a period of time to advertise.  If there is an interest and/or need within the specific department, applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be contacted by respective department supervisors, deans and/or division chairs.  Applications submitted will remain active for up to two years.  
 

Napa Valley Community College District (NVCCD) is looking for a part-time CTE/ Adult Ed Counselor. The ideal candidate is an active and positive person with the desire, skills, and knowledge to serve students, has the ability to work in an environment of continuous change; can manage stressful situations with patience and compassion; makes honest and ethical decisions. Please note this position is for the Career Education Department, to focus on Adult Education students.

This is a part-time, non-tenure track position.

The starting salary range is $74.84-$80.94/classroom hour, with future steps up to $94.69/classroom hour.  Placement is based on verified previous college teaching or counseling experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide a professional program of academic, career and vocational counseling and planning for student success in meeting student educational goals. Work closely with faculty, staff, administrators, and the community. Use computer technology as appropriate. Attend regional counseling meetings. Collaborate in the preparation and submittal of appropriate reports. Respect student rights as specified in District policy and applicable federal and state laws or regulations. Maintain a professional and effective relationship among the counselors and other segments of the educational community, including the local school district and other institutions. Monitor students' progress and prescribe interventions, as needed, for continued success. In collaboration with the Admissions and Records Department, accept credit from all regionally accredited colleges and universities, military, CLEP, Advanced Placement, and American Council on Education guide Non-Traditional credit (General Counselors only). Complete formal and informal requests for evaluation of credit, including Student Education Plans. 

Essential Functions

  • Providing comprehensive counseling services for students transitioning from local Adult Schools or community programs, and assisting in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, assessment, counseling, and follow-up services;

  • Assisting students in career exploration related to educational goals, developing student education plans (SEPs), and selection of courses;

  • Collaborating with area adult schools, community partners, and the State Center Adult Education Consortium (SCAEC) to develop programs and services that increase student transfers from identified organizations;

  • Collaborating with instructional and counseling faculty and staff from other departments and programs, including Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, EOPS/CARE, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Puente, IDILE, SYMBAA, USEAA, Veterans/International, TRiO Student Support Services, Athletics, and other special programs;

  • Developing and facilitating individual and group workshops to area adult schools and community partners;

  • Participating in the counseling, transfer and matriculation activities;

  • Participating in the implementation of guided pathways, student success teams and student equity initiatives;

  • Teaching courses that focus on career, college success, and transfer;

  • Utilizing and keeping abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories that include integrating technology to support student learning and identification of career objectives;

  • Assisting in curriculum development, program review, and student learning outcomes to improve student learning;

  • Utilizing technology as it applies to data collection and analysis for student success;

  • Serving on college committees, participatory governance, attending divisional and department meeting activities;

  • Performing other duties as assigned; and

  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,

OR the equivalent

(NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)


Desirable Qualification

  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;

  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;

  • Related work and professional experience;

  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students;

  • Related work and professional experience;

  • Experience in designing and preparing Student Education Plans (SEPs) for community college students;

  • Experience working with adult education students in a variety of settings;

  • Experience teaching college success courses;

  • Knowledge and utilization of instructional best practices for students in the classroom;

  • Knowledge of current transfer policies and admission requirements of CSUs and UCs;

  • Creative marketing skills to enhance student use of counseling services;

  • Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes;

  • Knowledge of transfer agreements between community colleges to meet transfer requirements;

  • Proficient at utilizing available computer applications and technology related to program coordination, counseling, and instruction in a timely and effective manner;

  • Experience working effectively with student success programs such as EOPS/CARE, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Puente, IDILE, SYMBAA, USEAA, Veterans/International, and TRiO Student Support Services;

  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;

  • Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;

  • Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions;

  • Experience participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus;

  • Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status;

  • Demonstrated ability to connect students with on and off campus resources to assist them in their college life management;

  • Demonstrated ability to use a broad range of technology pertaining to data collection and analysis for student success;

  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on issues of student success and student success teams;

  • Knowledge of California Community Colleges guided pathways and student equity;

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty and staff; and

  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
