Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time Community Engagement Specialist II in the Advancement/Community Engagement Department.  Candidates must be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule to include daytime, evening or weekend hours on a regular basis.  The standard work schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.  This is a non-bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. This position is eligible for telework up to 2 days a week. This eligibility is subject to change based on the needs of the unit.  This is not a remote position.


Under general supervision, incumbents take the College beyond the campus and into the community through one-on-one appointments on enrollment assistance, workshops, community events, civic engagement initiatives, campus tours, multilingual communications, and grass roots community outreach to residents, organizations and area businesses/employers.

Contacts include College staff, faculty, businesses, employers, students, community organization representatives and the general public.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide the initial point of contact for new and potential students, businesses/employers, and community members to provide information regarding college courses, programs, civic engagement opportunities, and services as well as community resources for student success offered through the College and partnering organizations.
  • Work in partnership and coordinate service delivery with College staff as well as partner organizations and their staff.
  • Stay informed of College programs and resources for promotional purposes to the local community.
  • Provide one-on-one advising virtually and/or in-person to students assisting them with the enrollment and registration process, scholarship assistance, FAFSA completion, and other services needed by students.
  • Research, identify solutions and direct residents to proper action steps; troubleshoot issues and follow-up with clients.
  • Organize logistical and administrative support for outreach, events, workforce development classes in the community, campus tours, cross departmental meetings, and program coordination.
  • Conduct grass-roots outreach in communities to raise awareness of services offered by the College and help residents enroll at the College. 
  • Participate in outreach events such as high school, community nights, festivals, meetings, and college fairs.
  • Visit community organizations, businesses/employers and community events to conduct information sessions, workshops, presentations, and other college services.
  • Collect and track data on strategic plan outcomes and produce monthly reports based on monthly community engagement activities. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree.
  • Two years of outreach or community engagement or higher education experience.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Ability to transport outreach materials (flyers, giveaways, tent, table, and chairs) up to 25 pounds in weight.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.  Reasonable accommodations may be available to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Proficient use of a personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite applications, specifically MS Outlook, Access, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, social media (Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube), MS Teams, flyer design software (Venngage preferred), and the Internet.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to translate flyers or review translations in the most requested languages in Montgomery College (Spanish, French, and Amharic).
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques, relationship building, and marketing strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on interpersonal relations.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with the capacity to interact effectively with a multicultural and diverse population.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Hiring Range: $27.68 - $35.98 per hour. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity.  The maximum salary for this position is $44.27.
