Learning Skills Specialist, Part-Time
Job Description
To support the academic success and retention of students by providing supplementary learning assistance services in one or more of the following areas: English, writing, reading, mathematics, computer skills, study skills, and other areas as needed. To provide information and assistance to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Director of the Learning Assistance Center but must be able to work independently in the absence of supervision.
Examples of Duties
Provide one-on-one instruction for students in the Learning Assistance Center.
Assist students with task and learning-oriented computer programs.
Assist students in registering for the use of the Learning Assistance Center and the use of various computer software programs.
Assist in the routine maintenance of computers and computer software, video equipment and videos, and any other office equipment in the assigned area.
Respond courteously to sensitive complaints and requests for information from students, faculty, staff, and the general public as needed; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner; refer inquiries as appropriate.
Operate a variety of office equipment including a phone system, copiers, facsimile machines, and computers; input and retrieve text; utilize various computer software programs.
Open and secure LAC as needed.
Provide information and forms to the public as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience:
Two years of responsible work with people, computers, and computer software. Demonstrated experience working with students with language barriers, students with disabilities, or students with low basic skills and/or low self-esteem desired. Experience in an educational environment working with students in small groups or individuals desired.
Training:
Bachelors degree in Education or related field or Masters degree in Education or related field.
Knowledge of:
- Various instructional techniques and materials.
- Characteristics and special problems of adult learners.
- Methods and techniques of adult instruction.
- Operational characteristics of educational equipment and tools.
- Operation of computers and the various computer software available in the Learning Assistance Center.
- Operations, services, and activities of the assigned area.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Basic mathematical principles.
- Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Ability to:
- Perform responsible and difficult work involving the use of independent judgment and personal initiative.
- Understand the organization and operation of the CVCC campus as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Compile and maintain confidential files.
- Type or word process at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
- Operate a variety of office machines including a computer.
- Maintain the security of confidential matters.
- Perform routine mathematical calculations.
- Respond to requests and inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Must be able to work as part of a team and must value collaboration; possess good teaching and organizational skills; able to communicate effectively both in verbal and written expression; and possess an educational philosophy that is compatible with the mission of the community college.
All adjunct positions are contingent upon enrollment needs and funding.

Copies of all unofficial degree transcripts, including coursework completed and degree conferred, must be provided during the on-line application process. Official transcripts are required to be forwarded to the CVCC Personnel Office upon hire.
