Training Specialist Senior / Intermediate - AHA Instructor

Job Description

Job Summary

The University of Michigan Clinical Simulation Center (UMCSC) is seeking candidates for the position of AHA instructor and Simulation Technician. The UMCSC is an innovative instructional environment and learning laboratory providing challenging, immersive simulation training for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals at the University of Michigan.  As part of the Department of Learning Health Sciences, the UMCSC plays an integral role in leading change through innovative and effective education and establishing assessment methodologies used in clinical care. The mission of the Clinical Simulation Center is to advance best practices in healthcare education and improve patient safety through the development of effective simulation-based instruction, robust assessment, and rigorous research.

This position will serve in dual role, an Instructor for the American Heart Association (AHA) educational courses: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and simulation technician will provide technical, clinical and educational support for CSC during simulation-based educational activities, including working with faculty and staff to develop and control effective simulation-based education within CSC and in clinical settings.

Responsibilities*

Instructors will teach all required AHA guidelines for (ACLS and PALS) certification and all Michigan Medicine specific guideline and policies as it pertains to ACLS and PALS. Instructors will test and assess learner proficiency and determine whether learners achieve a passing competency leading a Practical Mega Code hands on scenario.

Work closely with faculty and staff to develop new simulation training curriculum and scenario development. Review new Instructional Plans (IP) for content and equipment. 

Provide training for faculty and staff on uses of simulator and other equipment within the Simulation Center. In a lead role, may oversee the training of new Simulation Technician Staff.  Provide education for clinically relevant skills, including, but not limited to, CSC on-site training (OTP), BLS, ACL and PALS. Proctor and oversee FES and FLS testing and management learner documentation. Provide training assessment feedback during training debrief session. Actively participate in the sessions, including leading discussion and taking on a patient and/or confederate role during training events. 

Required Qualifications*

Current AHA instructor certification for ACLS and PALS.  

Senior Level: Minimum of 5 years of curriculum development with minimum of 5 years' experience with high fidelity simulation equipment and task trainers or experience in a clinical healthcare setting (e.g. EMT, Anesthesia technician, ORT, etc.), or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired. 

Intermediate Level: Minimum of 2 years of curriculum development with minimum of 2 years' experience with high fidelity simulation equipment and task trainers or experience in a clinical healthcare setting (e.g. EMT, Anesthesia technician, ORT, etc.), or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.

Ability to work individually and as group with minimal supervision.

Desired Qualifications*

Familiarity with Michigan Medicine guidelines and policies.  Have a strong background in computer network and Information Technology.

Background Screening
