Full Job Description

The Academic Advisor is a full-time Landmark College staff member who provides developmental academic advising for students who are studying online or on campus. Advisors are expected to become well-versed in the Landmark College curriculum and approaches to learning, and to effectively guide students along their degree path. Advisors help students identify strengths and challenges, set, monitor, and adjust goals, and formulate study strategies. Advisors must become competent in online technologies such as Microsoft Office, and track and manage data in our student information systems. Advisors also provide guidance around self-advocacy and wellness referrals and assess each student's readiness to explore career resources. Advisors should be able to help students make informed decisions about their academic progress and troubleshoot a variety of barriers they may encounter on their learning path.

Advisors are expected to stay informed about current practices for supporting student development and utilize multiple modes of inquiry in response to the neurodivergent learning needs of students. Advisors are expected to stay current in these areas through professional development and scholarship opportunities.

In addition to their advising duties, advisors are expected to be active contributors to the Landmark College strategic plan initiatives and community-building activities.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Foster student self-advocacy and independence by working closely with each student to establish educational and transitional goals that reflect their personal interests, values and abilities.
  • Encourage and support students to think critically, seek out resources, and implement action plans that support the attainment of their goals.
  • Understand a range of learning styles and support neurodiverse students in understanding their areas of strength and challenge.
  • Provide information about campus resources available to students and guide students through the processes to access these resources.
  • Orient students to Landmark during the student onboarding process, either face-to-face or in the online environment.
  • Help students and families (within FERPA guidelines) to understand and navigate Landmark College academic policies and processes, support structures and services, degree requirements, academic deadlines, co-curricular opportunities, and resources.
  • Work with a variety of web-based and in-house technical platforms and support students in navigating those platforms
  • Assist students with selecting courses, degree planning, and developing appropriate pathways toward graduation.
  • Monitor student progress in student information systems, engage in consultation, and make appropriate referrals to support student success. Maintain records of degree plans and session visit notes in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Consult with staff in the Advising Office, the Registrar, the Drake Center for Academic Support, the Academic Intervention Team, Career Connections, Student Affairs, and other campus resources and refer students to support, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and actively engage with the advising department on campus. Attend meetings with staff and faculty groups,

QUALIFICATIONS

A Masters degree in a related field is preferred but a Bachelor's degree with commensurate experience will be considered. Knowledge of theoretical information on advising and advising neurodiverse students with LD/ADHD and ASD, and student development is preferred. Experience working with students as an advisor, coach, or academic support provider at the college level is preferred.

Confidence using a variety of online technologies and programs, and comfort learning new technologies, is essential.

An understanding of learning differences, including the research basis for understanding specific learning disabilities and attention disorders, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of the developmental and instructional challenges of working with neurodivergent students is expected. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and proficiency/comfort working with online communication tools. Understanding of FERPA, ADA law, and other laws/regulations that pertain to working with college students. The position requires regular interaction with Faculty, Staff, Students, and Parents. Must have the ability to represent Landmark College professionally in all interactions. The ability to responsibly handle confidential/sensitive information is critical. This is a salaried and exempt position which requires a willingness to occasionally work weekends and after hours.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This is an on-campus, in-person position. Computer use involving repetitive hand and wrist motion may be required.
