Academic Coach-Upward Bound (Grant Funded)
Job Description
SUMMARY
Promote the learning community in an assigned area by providing assistance and instructional support to students and faculty.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Provides proactive outreach and academic coaching for students; assists with student support activities;
2. Presents information to students in one-on-one and group meetings on various aspects of college programs such as course selection, majors, transferability, admissions, financial aid, assessments, career choices etc.;
3. Facilitates student learning strategies in traditional and online courses;
4. Refers students to appropriate resources (i.e. advising, counseling, tutoring, Student Life, Library Services, etc.);
5. Documents student interactions in appropriate college systems in a timely manner;
6. May provide reports and other analytics regarding student interactions in an assigned area; including attendance, academic progress, interventions, etc.;
7. May monitor student progress and assist in the development of ways to engage students fully in the learning progression;
8. Assists with faculty workshops, activities, and the creation of learning communities;
9. Serves as a liaison with various academic departments to ensure support aligns with course/program outcomes;
10. Serves as an outreach liaison marketing the services provided; and
11. Responsible for establishing mentorships with new Academic Coaches and/or Tutors as part of the onboarding process.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree required. Masters Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE
One year of related experience in teaching, tutoring, advising, and other program areas related to assignment is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Must have knowledge of coaching, instructional, and mentoring techniques;
2. Knowledge of processes and resources for organizing and leading group and collaborative activities;
3. Must have effective planning, organization, communication and interpersonal skills;
4. Ability to interact with students of diverse backgrounds;
5. Must be able to maintain an established schedule, which may include evenings and weekends;
6. Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information;
7. Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, classroom or other current learning technologies for effective teaching at the community college level;
8. Experience using standard office software programs and the technology needed to support students at the college level;
9. Knowledge of online course practices and procedures;
10. Knowledge of Developmental Mathematics, Developmental Writing, and/or Developmental Reading;
11. Knowledge of HCC student services and instructional support services available to students;
12. Must be able to collect, update, manage and maintain data and produce reporting; and
13. Depending on assigned area, bilingual skills may be required.
