Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Library Services demonstrates progressive leadership with a proactive and innovative mindset, possessing strong analytical skills and deep knowledge of current trends in academic libraries, including AI-driven research tools, OER curation, digital literacy, and emerging instructional technologies. The Director of Library will have experience in AI-enhanced library services, such as chatbots for research assistance and predictive analytics for student engagement, and have successfully integrated OER into curriculum development, supporting faculty in the adoption and creation of OER materials. With exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, that can foster collaborative partnerships across departments, ensuring a seamless integration of library services into broader institutional goals.  The Director of Libraries expertise extends to educational technology, digital repositories, and library systems management, coupled with ongoing involvement in professional library associations and consortia, particularly those focusing on technology and open-access initiatives.  They are committed to equity, accessibility, and inclusive library practices, ensuring that library resources and services contribute to improving student engagement and success in a rapidly evolving higher education landscape.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide strategic vision and leadership for library services & academic student support services, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and student success initiatives.
  2. Ensures all library operations comply with institutional policies, procedures, and applicable accreditation standards, maintaining alignment with the colleges mission and strategic goals.
  3. Adheres to and enforces college policies, procedures, and guidelines while fostering a culture of accountability, equity, and continuous improvement within the library team.
  4. Develops and oversees the implementation of AI-driven library services, such as automated research assistance, data-informed decision-making, and digital resource management.
  5. Develops and monitors the annual library budget in alignment with institutional priorities, ensuring effective use of resources to support academic programs, student services, and emerging technologies.
  6. Manages hiring, scheduling, performance evaluations, and professional development for all library staff, fostering a collaborative and service-oriented environment that supports student success and academic excellence.
  7. Identifies funding opportunities, including grants and institutional support, to enhance library services, technology, and collections; prepares proposals and ensures compliance with funding requirements.
  8. Guides faculty and students in the adoption and use of OER, open-access repositories, AI-powered academic resources, and/or any new emerging initiative that drives student success.
  9. Supports digital literacy and information literacy programs, integrating critical thinking skills for evaluating AI-generated content and research.
  10. Advocates for library-related policies and strategic initiatives that enhance student learning, faculty research, and technological innovation.
  11. Maintains policies and procedures for library services, academic student support services, and digital learning resources.
  12. Oversees budget expenditures for electronic resources, AI-enhanced library tools, OER repositories, and academic support initiatives.
  13. Leads efforts in accreditation compliance, ensuring library services meet evolving higher education standards.
  14. Develops initiatives to leverage AI for metadata management, research discovery, and student engagement analytics.
  15. Ensures ongoing assessment and reporting of library impact on student success and faculty teaching effectiveness.
  16. Fosters a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and responsiveness to emerging higher education trends.
  17. Serves on College committees as assigned.
  18. Any other duties as assigned by the Dean of Academic Innovation & Technology and the Provost/VP of Academic Affairs.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Masters Degree in Library Science, Information Science, Leadership, or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional library experience, with demonstrated expertise in library administration and management in higher education. 
  • Experience in developing and maintaining partnerships with other libraries, consortia, and academic units.
Preferred:
  • Doctorate in Library Science, Information Science, Leadership, or related field.
  • Preference given for demonstrated excellence in integrating emerging technologies, AI applications in library services, and Open Educational Resources (OER) strategies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The Director of Library Services possesses proficiency in AI-driven and other emerging library technologies, machine learning applications, and digital research tools, along with a strong understanding of OER adoption, licensing, curation, and integration into academic programs. 
Must have the ability to evaluate and implement AI-enhanced search engines, chatbots, and personalized learning resources, ensuring that the library services remain at the forefront of technological advancements. 
Must demonstrate expertise includes library materials, academic research databases, and digital archiving techniques, allowing for the effective management and accessibility of academic resources. 
Must bring creativity in developing and implementing technology-infused library and academic support programs, they can design innovative solutions that enhance student and faculty engagement. 
Must possess strong organizational and leadership skills enable them to manage multiple projects and deadlines efficiently, while their commitment to fostering a sense of belonging for students ensures that the library spaces and educational resources remain accessible and supportive for all users.

Additional Information

Supervision Exercised
The Library Services Director supervises all staff at both the Ft. McIntosh and South Campus.

Supervision Received
The Library Services Director is supervised by the Dean of Academic Innovation & Technology.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment.    
Work inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.  
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
