NC LIVE is North Carolinas statewide library cooperative, supporting 200+ public and academic libraries through its mission to support education, enhance economic development, and improve the quality of life of all North Carolinians. NC LIVE provides content, products, services, professional development and technical support to North Carolinas libraries. Content includes an online collection of 1.8 billion full-text articles, ebooks, streaming videos, digitized newspapers, language learning tools, and more. NC LIVE provides authentication, discovery and website services to libraries to eliminate barriers to access. NC LIVE provides professional development opportunities through regional workshops, the instruction program, and an annual conference. Since its founding in 1997 by representatives of its four Communities of Interest (the community college system, the independent colleges and universities, the public libraries and State Library, and the state university system), NC LIVE has enjoyed a track record of success using entrepreneurial and innovative approaches that build on its collaborative infrastructure. The organization acts as a conduit for partnership as its Executive Director engages member libraries, state agencies and other groups with shared values and goals.

NC LIVE has an operating budget of more than $4.3 million and is funded through recurring state appropriations, with solid annual support from the independent colleges and universities. The consortiums offices are headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina at its host institution, North Carolina State University Libraries, well renowned for its achievements in advancing library technologies and spaces.

Essential Job Duties

NC LIVE is seeking an Electronic Resources Librarian to ensure access for all North Carolinians to NC LIVEs online collection of over 1.8 billion full-text articles, ebooks, streaming videos, digitized newspapers, and more. These resources are a combination of owned, subscribed, and Open Access resources available to all residents of North Carolina. The Electronic Resources Librarian plays a key role in NC LIVEs day-to-day operations by maintaining various points of access to these resources for member libraries and end-users, including through the NC LIVE website, authentication system, discovery system, and vendor interfaces.

This position plays a crucial role in supporting NC LIVEs mission to provide high-quality digital resources statewide. They collaborate with colleagues at 200+ member institutions to integrate NC LIVEs content into their local systems and enhance e-resource discovery and usage across the state. In addition, they maintain close working relationships with vendors, content providers, and other consortia in support of e-resource usability and accessibility. This position reports to the Executive Director and serves as a liaison to one NC LIVE advisory committee.

This position is based in North Carolina. This position is eligible for flexible hours and a hybrid work environment, based on organizational and operational needs.

Responsibilities
The Electronic Resources Librarians duties and responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring access to NC LIVEs electronic resources for member libraries and end users
  • Supporting libraries in integrating NC LIVE content into their local systems and in providing access via their remote authentication methods
  • Troubleshooting and remedying electronic resource issues to ensure the best possible usability and accessibility
  • Managing and maintaining discovery and metadata for consortial e-resources
  • Maintaining remote resource access to NC LIVEs resources via NC LIVEs EZproxy instances
  • Building and maintaining close working relationships with content providers, vendors, and other consortia and member libraries in support of e-resources discovery and access
  • Contributing to the assessment of resources and services by analyzing and reporting on usage trends and collections data
  • Maintaining current knowledge of regional and national trends in e-resource management
  • Collaborating closely with NC LIVE and member library staff
  • Liaising with one NC LIVE advisory committee

Minimum Education and Experience

  • ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, or equivalent advanced degree.

Skills required include:
  • Knowledge of trends and practices in electronic resource management
  • Familiarity with library management systems supporting e-resource and discovery functions, such as integrated library systems (ILS), knowledge bases, electronic resource management systems (ERMS), issue tracking systems, or discovery interfaces
  • Experience designing and managing projects, including bringing them to a successful conclusion
  • Ability to work independently, creatively, and collaboratively in a team environment, including the ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships

Preferred Qualifications

It is not required that candidates meet any of the preferred qualifications to be considered for this position. The following skills represent some of the areas in which this position could potentially grow and focus, based on the incumbents background and interests.

  • Relevant experience managing e-resources and vendor relationships
  • Sufficient knowledge of descriptive metadata (e.g., MARC records, KBART holdings files) to identify problematic collections
  • Experience configuring discovery services and knowledge bases
  • Familiarity with proxy services
