Laredo College continuously accepts applications for part-time (adjunct) instructors to create a pool of candidates for each session/semester. Applications will be reviewed and positions will be filled based on department needs. Applications received for this pool will remain active for one year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Culinary Arts Adjunct Instructor is responsible for preparing students for a career in the hospitality industry, providing technical instruction relevant to the actual work environment using the prescribed course curriculum, exercising methods of recruitment and retention of students, working within and in harmony with the institution's goals and objectives. The Culinary Arts Adjunct Instructor is responsible to provide course instruction and monitor teaching/learning effectiveness in his/her discipline in accordance with the duties as listed in the essential duties and responsibilities and as assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education, or Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs in accordance with the Laredo College Manual of Policy. May be required to teach classes, weekend classes, an extra class, substitute when needed, and travel off campus to monitor student and/or teach classes at lab sites. Perform the duties to include direct preparation and seasoning and cooking of salads, soups, fish, meats, vegetables, desserts, or other foods. May plan and price menu items, order supplies, and keep records and accounts. Responsible for activities which consist of collaboration with specified personnel and plans and develops recipes and menus, determines production schedules and worker-time requirements to ensure timely delivery of services in the hospitality industry, estimates amounts and costs and requisitions supplies and equipment to ensure efficient operation, evaluates and solves procedural problems to ensure safe and efficient operations in the hospitality sector. This individual will provide course instruction and monitor teaching/learning effectiveness in his/her discipline in accordance with the duties as listed below and as assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education, Senior Vice- President for Academic & Student Affairs in accordance with the Laredo College Manual of Policy.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities- Develop, evaluate, and revise programs, courses, syllabi, and objectives to ensure instructional and programmatic responsiveness to the occupational and academic needs of students and reflect accurately the expectations the faculty has for their students and any new competencies delineated in the programmatic evaluation process, and to ensure instructional quality as demonstrated by students' achievement of competency-based objectives.
- Stay current of changes that occur in discipline. Participate in departmental initiatives to infuse changes into curriculum. Participate in interdisciplinary discussions which are directed at improving student learning and evaluating core competencies curriculum.
- Substitute for colleagues as appropriate.
- Participate in college activities which include but are not limited to orientation, convocation, in-service, graduation, and workshops designed for professional growth and development.
- Prepare and, on the first day of class, distribute syllabi, to inform students, about course requirements, grading requirements, testing, assignments, absence policy, and other pertinent information for each course assigned to a faculty member to teach by the Department Chairperson with approval of the Dean of Workforce Education and the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs.
- Actively participate in meetings called by the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Dean of Workforce Education, and/or Department Chairperson for the purposes of disseminating information, providing input into the decision making process and sharing expertise with colleagues.
- Prepare, administer and grade assignments and/or examinations in a timely manner to inform the student of their progress and allow for the development of a plan of constructive activities that will allow the student to succeed. Use multiple measurements of assessment. Include opportunities for research and outside assignments.
- Cooperate with the evaluation procedures of courses by students; participate in faculty evaluations; and/or act as mentor to faculty members.
- Provide a safe environment for students and be responsible for the security and daily maintenance of assigned equipment, materials, and classrooms.
- Encourage use of support services available to students. Collaborate with support services staff to ensure that appropriate information is being shared and discussed.
- Participate a minimum of three hours per week on campus assigned duties, including an average of two posted office hours, for each course taught, for consultation with students.
- Provide appropriate information to Library staff regarding desired discipline materials.
- Provide information and/or data to the requesting administrator so that the proper reports may be completed and filed with the proper educational agency, funding agency, or accrediting agency.
- Follow procedures related to the Registration Office, including grade reports and deadlines; attendance record reports; withdrawal deadlines; class changes; and time and room scheduling.
- Follow the proper procedures for purchasing groceries, requesting textbooks, instructional supplies, expendable supplies; submit travel and absence reports on a timely basis.
- Participate in the preparation and ongoing updating of class schedules, the catalog and the web page.
- Respond to request for information from the Dean of Workforce Education and/or Department Chair.
- Promote the College's programs and curricula.
- Follow the academic calendar and other policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Trustees.
- Visit laboratory sites (restaurants), evaluate the students at the sites and confer with supervisors.
- Use current technology to enhance effectiveness, including but not limited to computers, CAI programs such as PASPort, Blackboard/SoftChalk/Camtasia Studio, Canvas, PowerPoint, audio visual equipment, and willing to learn and apply any other new technology needed to enhance learning.
- Maintain FERPA standards as applied to public institutions of higher learning.
- Participate in Southern Association accreditation activities; participate in Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and other agencies reports, site visits, self-studies, etc.; implement Institutional Effectiveness plan in occupation area.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education, Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs, and LC President.

Required Qualifications:- Associate's degree with a major in the teaching discipline.
Three (3) years of work experience in the area of culinary arts, nutrition, dietetics, and/or home economics including field experience.
- Bachelor's degree with a major in the teaching discipline.
- Extensive knowledge in the areas of food sciences, nutrition, sanitation/safety, basic food preparation, professional cooking and meal service, international cuisine, fundamentals of baking, grade manager, buffet theory and production, principles of food beverages, the management of food production and service in the hospitality industry.
- American Culinary Federation Certified, Executive Chef Certification, and/or Serv-Safe instructor/proctor certification.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- The faculty must demonstrate discipline, competence, pedagogical competence that engages the student and focuses on student learning.
- The faculty must demonstrate the ability to use current technology to enhance teaching effectiveness.
- The faculty must be cooperative and professional in his/her communication with the public, the students, colleagues, college administrators and Culinary Arts advisory committee members.
- The faculty must have good writing skills, vocabulary skills, and computer skills.
- The faculty must be able to operate specialized kitchen equipment and audio-visual instructional materials.
- Must be able to develop and use laboratory/lecture strategies that enhance teaching effectiveness and promote student learning.
- Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook is required.
- Faculty must be willing to work days, evenings, and weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Work Environment:
Work is performed in a standard office environment. Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time. The noise level in the work environments is usually quiet to moderate.
