Other Conditions: Federal funds, temporary to 06/30/2023, with the possibility of extension, pending satisfactory job performance, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements; to begin approximately 07/22, pending actual staffing requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supports instruction and research conducted in the campus teaching gardens.
  2. Performs regular care for and maintenance of plants, irrigation, and pest and weed control within the teaching gardens including plant propagation and all horticultural tasks.
  3. Assists instructors in preparing, staffing, and cleaning up following classes held in the outdoor classrooms and teaching gardens.
  4. Maintains clean, safe, and orderly facilities for teaching and undergraduate research, plant propagation, storage, vehicle parking, and irrigation. The maintenance of the facilities must utilize sustainable agricultural practices.
  5. Ensures compliance with campus/university COVID-19 guidance for health and safety.
  6. Recruits, hires, trains, evaluates, and coordinates schedules and tasks for student assistants and volunteers.
  7. Propagates plants needed for teaching and/or undergraduate research in the campus gardens.
  8. Manages budgets, procures resources, and maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies that support the outdoor classrooms and gardens.
  9. Establishes and maintains mutually beneficial working relationships with campus and community stakeholders who work with Native Hawaiian plants and/or teaching gardens.
  10. Operates a vehicle to pick up supplies off-campus, as needed.
  11. Properly uses, stores, and disposes of any hazardous chemicals, tools, equipment, or organic matter within the outdoor classroom and campus gardens per OSHA and hazardous waste guidelines. The includes maintaining an inventory of chemicals and provides inventory reports to supervisor.
  12. Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Horticulture, Botany, or Tropical Agriculture and 2 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for managing a teaching garden or plant nursery, or agriculture research support; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in managing a teaching garden or agriculture research support as demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with plant nursery management.
  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in garden or plant nursery.
  5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions (e.g. outdoor, heat, rain, mud, vog, wind, and insects) and carry/lift 40 pounds.
  9. Demonstrated ability to prepare spreadsheets for budgets and inventory with spreadsheet software (e.g. Excel).
  10. Trained in operating chemical sprayers, tillers, weed whackers, chain saws, and horticultural hand tools.
  11. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  12. Functional knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices.
  13. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated experience propagating native Hawaiian plants with emphasis on endangered species.
  2. Experience in pest management with emphasis on integrated pest management (IPM), fertilizing, weed management, and chemical application.
  3. Experience installing and maintaining landscape, nursery and propagation irrigation systems.
  4. Experience in creating and managing a budget.
